Laurier adds F - Kyle Wilhelm from Kingston (OJHL).

It is the 5th commitment for Laurier, all from the OJHL, except Ryan Hamberg (AJHL), who did play 2 of his 4 Jr.A seasons in the OJHL. So far only 1 recruited player (Ryan Lopes) has suited up for a CHL team.

I coached Wilhelm during the surprising Voyageurs run of the OJHL playoffs. Guy is a great offensive player, playing top line minutes and scoring huge goals vs. Wellington and Trenton, but was invisible during the third round against Whitby, but that was also due to Whitby's defensive play. Fitness MAYBE an issue but looks are deciving for sure.

The 2007/08 season doesn't count towards eligibility as he was 20.

The CIS does not qualify Pro Levels, "Pro" is any professional level of hockey in North America (Senior is not considered professional) - they're all the same as far as they are concerned.

The clock starts ticking the January after you turn 21.

Really?..I could have sworn it was the year he leaves Junior, is in pro camp, so say September, as long as he is not 21, he can enrol in CIS for January without penalty, not a free for all until you are 21, actually 21.5? But I suppose the vast majority are 20 in their first pro camp, certainly those who are undrafted. And you would know better than me.

Paradis not lost in Manitoba

the Bisons have added solid winger Jesse Paradis from the Saskatoon Blades. 15 goals and 34 assists in 72 games in the WHL this past year.

FYI - It's easier to copy the rules rather than paraphrase.

40.10.6.2.3.6.3 An athlete who has participated in any league classified by CIS as professional prior to December 31 of the year that athlete turns 21, and who has not participated in CIS hockey in the same academic year as his professional participation, shall:
a) Not be charged with having consumed CIS eligibility, and
b) Be eligible to participate upon entry.

40.10.6.2.3.6.4 With respect to professional team training camps and exhibition games, a men’s ice hockey player is not considered to have participated professionally regardless of the number of exhibition games played in. Participation in a league defined as professional by CIS is only recognized at the moment an athlete’s name appears on the roster of a regular season or playoff professional game.

Link to Eligibility Policy

So, you can play pro until you turn 21 - then the clock starts ticking. This is why you have kids coming in at Christmas having played pro for 2-3 months without losing eligibility and starting right away. If they play in January - a) they can't play CIS for the rest of the season, b) they have to sit 365 days and c) they lose 1 year AND must maintain some association to a university to maintain their education package (which is a totally different discussion).

Bisons announce 3 more

well it is official. James Henry is a Bison. He is a tremendous leader, competitive and skilled to boot with 71 points in his final year of Junior.

http://gobisons.ca/index.php?page=news&id=2355

The Bisons continue to do a good job recruiting top Manitoba players. this brings the 2012 recruiting class to 9, with likely a couple more high profile announcements coming up.

James Henry
Paul Ciarelli
Aaron Lewadniuk (will redshirt in 2012-13)
Jesse Paradis
Dylan Kelly
Craig Scott
Nathan Green (no announcement but virtually certain he will be playing for the Bisons this year after redshirting last year)

Brock Sutherland

Deven Dubyk

He is listed above in the post referencing all the players to their respective schools. Recruiter (who has talked to the players directly) has determined at the last point he is either Laurier or Waterloo, so no, he is not confirmed yet, and at this point should not be listed in that post as to confirmed to Laurier.

I am obviously very interested in where he ends up. Waterloo has been recruiting very few players lately, only adding 3-4 players per year, but all of whom of high quality with substantial CHL experience.

If he does choose Laurier, he would return to the rink where he played minor midget, along with several teammates from that team including Chad Lowry and recent recruit Kyle Wilhelm.

Interesting about McPherson, he had already committed to Michigan Tech (NCAA). Also interesting to see Beljo transfer from Lakehead.

Once he played for Gatineau, his NCAA career was blocked. I'm surprised they said he could sit out a year before playing - my understanding was once you played a CHL game (even an exhibition game) you were ineligible to play NCAA.

http://www.thehockeyadvocate.com/?page_id=465

He falls into the category of losing "some" eligibility:

"compete in any major junior game before their expected date of high school graduation, without signing a contract"

Playing in some major junior games before his expected high school graduation date (should he have played after grade 12 he would have been fully ineligible), but he played in his 17 year old year (ie. grade 12). Since he only played 9 games, it is not unreasonable to think no formal contract was signed.

Kent Mcpherson played with Gatineau as 18 year old and was done high school. http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/pdisplay.php?pid=122649

We were trying to get McPherson but he choos Ryerson which is a huge bonus for them

Norm Eziekel (Barrie) - Western
