Rhett Rachinki to Golden Bears

Evan Daum ‏(@evandaum) has tweeted that Rhett Rachinski (Edm. Oil Kings) has committed to Alberta.

Quote:
Rhett Rachinski is staying in Edmonton. Just announced as one of the Golden Bears recruits for the 2012-13 season. Good addition.
In a follow-up tweet:

Quote:
McGill had also been pushing hard for Rachinski. The Redmen contacted the former Oil King during training camp last season.

RMC adds defenseman Eric Bouchard from the Aurora Tigers (OJHL). 6'1", 200lbs, compared to our returning defensemen (not including Alex Pym) hes a monster!

Question?

Can a player who has commited, decommit so to speak, if another school expresses interest or a pro opportunity arises?

As far as I know they can. In the CIS a commitment is basically just the athlete's word...they don't have to sign a Letter of Intent like they do in the NCAA.

Although there is currently a dispute between the Manitoba Bisons and Ottawa Geegees over a football player. A Winnipeg boy committed to Ottawa then had a change of heart when the coach who recruited him left Ottawa.

As UNB Bruins Fan said - there are no official Letters of Intent in the CIS. A player can say 10 different things and still change his mind the day before showing up. Most announcements are straight-up, but they can change there minds at anytime (if someone was to float a better offer). As such, I don't get too excited about announcements until I see them on the ice.

Some announce a school as their 'choice' on the condition they don't get a good pro offer (play Pro in the Fall and show-up at Christmas). This is fine as well and they can still go do a different school if they want.

This can make requiting 'Top Talent' interesting as you are never really 100% sure if they're going to arrive.

Byron Katapaytuk (Fort Frances, SIJHL) is going to Nipissing. He had 175 points in 149 games the last three years and was the league MVP this year.

Two more commitments I do not believe are posted yet.

(D) Tim Campbell - Woodstock (MHL) to Lethbridge
(F) Ryan Nickerson - Yarmouth (MHL) to Guelph

Campbell played 3 seasons in the OHL before joining Woodstock where he put up 72 points as a defenceman.

Also (F) Mathieu Pompei from Yarmouth is off to McGill if that is not posted.

Sorry for any duplicates.

Waterloo loses Josh McFadden who previously committed to them as he has signed an ELC with the Florida Panthers.

RMC adds forward Brendan Wright from the Bridgewater Lumberjacks. He brings CHL experience and we dont have a lot of that at RMC. Only CHL experienced guys we have are Alex Pym and Scott McDonald.

The listing of commitments has slowed down quite a bit. Some teams have committed to quite a few while others havent committed or announced any at all.

I am sure it varys from team to team, but is there an average of how many a team will commit to and how many they will actually take or play?

Most teams have a 26 player roster (which includes a healthy scratch or two). Assuming an equal balance over 4 years - each team is looking for 6 players every year. Some years might be lower or higher.

In most cases a player will crack the line-up if the team has pursued him. It is rare that a player selects a team that hasn't contact him. There are no guarantees though - as the team has to balance talent with seniority.

In UNB's case, Gardiner doesn't like to pre-release names anymore as a result of an incident a few years ago when two of the three changed their minds and went else were.
This will also be an important recuriting year for UNB as well - the team is losing 3 of the top 4 DMen and the team's Top Forward/Captain plus two other utility forwards (the magic '6' number).

Looking back at last year - four forwards came in at the start and two joined at Christmas.

That would be the three Barrie Colts? But the one who stayed, Hunter Tremblay, did OK for himself.

That reminds me of several years ago at Dal, when they had a big press conference to introduce Casey Walsh, Marty King, Gordie Walsh and Duncan Fader.

Casey and Marty went to SMU cause top ice time couldn't be guarenteed at Dal and the other guys went back to Kingston as OA's and both ended up in UPEI the next year.

It's probably prudent to not make a big splash until the kid is in school.

Correct on the Colt's. And 'yes', Hunter did pretty well

I'm not even sure you can count on having them when they have enrolled - some will jump in late September. For me - it's skates on ice proof.

Nice list snipe, thanks

Looks like Calgary is the only team not reporting or maybe getting kids to commit.

Heard a rumour Mount Royal is going full tilt in preparation for the first season in the CIS. Apparently a wack of players are being invited out. Heard 80 but I dont know if that was a huge exaggeration or not(Last years team, committments, committments with no guarantee and walk ons)

On a side note from that, is it customary for a team to commit a player with no guarantee of playing, still having to try out?

Laurier announces their recruits:

14 new players announced, I assume this means many likely on their way out, but I will have to see when the roster is released:

G - Brandon Foote (Guelph, OHL) X

D - Derek Holden (Windsor, OHL) X
D - Matthew Provost (Blainville-Boisbriand, QMJHL) X
D - Dylan MacDonald (Plymouth, OHL) X
D - Ryan Hamberg (Grand Prairie - AJHL)*
D - Matthew Sollows (Vaughan - OJHL)*
D - Matthew Brown (Calgary - AJHL)*
D - Drew Henry (Cornwall - CCHL)

F - Ryan Lopes (Georgetown - OJHL)* X
F - Trent Hawke (Brantford - GOJHL) X
F - Miles Maclean (Trenton - OJHL)*
F - Kyle Wilhelm (Kingston - OJHL)*
F - Greg Cerilli (Thorold - GOJHL)
F - Brett Priestap (Elmira - GOJHL)

* - already announced via commitment sites
X - major junior experience

Overall, I have no idea what to think of the recruits, as I have no idea who is staying and who is leaving. The purpose of recruiting is to fill holes and improve upon weaker spots in your roster. Without that context, I have no idea how to properly judge the incoming group. They added 3 major junior defencemen, a huge bonus, but are any of the 3 major junior defencemen they already had returning?

One recruit I know is much needed is Brandon Foote. He is the goaltender I was hoping Laurier would acquire. With Ryan Daniels in his last year, they needed to acquire a proven major junior goaltender who could backstop the team. Hopefully Foote enjoys his time, and can be counted on to backstop this team beyond this year.

On paper their best 2 recruits would be Foote and Holden, who has registered 39 points in the OHL as a defenceman.

EDIT - I see I was beaten to it

How did you beat me to posting this? I check laurierathletics daily as last year they posted their recruits in July and I was expecting them any time. The article was posted today. I would have bet $10,000 I was the only one who checks that site. Were you linked to it from another site or are you a fan (there are not many of us).
