Get Ready, Buffalo: The Germans Are Coming

Quote:
After it was all over, a number of fans approached Adler Mannheim press officer Matthias Fries and making an excursion to Buffalo. It all came together and a tour was organized. The 50 available slots quickly sold out, then an additional 10 to 15 Adler fans booked flights just to be a part of things.

All told, 65 or so full-throated German hockey fans will be in the house at First Niagara Center next Wednesday, February 8, when the Sabres taken on Boston, and again on Friday, February 10, versus Dallas.

For 25-year-old Adler Mannheim season ticket-holder Stefan Schaefer, it has been a countdown to the big trip since the idea was hatched. Schaefer proudly admits that he has been a season-ticket-holder since his teen years, is one of the drum bangers at the games, and helps organize special fan events and merchandising, as well as to administer the teams Facebook site. His group will start out in Boston, then, after the Buffalo visit, will make their way up to Toronto. Says Schaefer, We dont miss Adler games as there are no games at home that weekend. We can see five NHL teams, we can see Hecht, we can see [Boston Bruin and former Adler] Dennis Seidenberg, whose brother Yannic plays at Mannheim. We can see the Stanley Cup champion, we can see a very special game in Toronto, we can visit the Hockey Hall of Fame. Its a very big value we get within a five-day visit.

It sounds like the makings of an awesome trip for any hockey fan!

Welcome! Wilkommen!

I imagine the 65 of them will be louder than most of the rest of the rink....

Same. I'll probably be able to pick them out of the crowd.

Pity Hecht probably won't be playing though.

If I were Hecht, I would try to do a meet and greet with them. Head-health permitting, of course.

I can see that happening; and with Ehrhoff healthy, there always is another German in the lineup too.

I hope they do some of the chants we heard in Germany. Then maybe the fans will pick it up and we will have something unique here as the Sabres fanbase in the NHL. Something that will really excite not only the fans but the players as well, and piss off the opposition.

I want to see the post game salute.

This is ****ing awesome. Reenergize the team and the fans, in a sense.

Since it's happened to the Germans, is this what's in store for the USA post militaristic super power era?...... Everybody becomes a hockey fan?

Could be pretty cool........

That's pretty awesome. I hope that they get some kind of welcome from the team and organization.

I'm going to the Boston game, and may end up at the Dallas game if no one picks up those tickets. It sounds like they're a pretty rowdy group. I'm looking forward to hearing them!

What makes this interesting to me, is based on my experience with a German at Niagara Falls:

Two years ago, a few months after the olympics, the fam and I did the Maid of the Mist thing...and while I was sitting on a bench waiting for the wife & kids to get out of the bathroom, I overheard what sounded like German. I notice 2 parents and two small kids sitting near me. I said to the father "Are you German?" He says "yes". Me, trying to relate on some level, says "Oh, so you follow Jochen Hecht?" Blank stare. "The hockey player...he plays for the Buffalo Sabres right near here...he was on the GERMAN OLYMPIC TEAM!!! I thought that last line would certainly jar his memory, almost making him feel SILLY for not knowing who just represented his country at the olympics!

Blank stare.

He finally says to me: "for every 1 hockey fan in Germany, there are 99 soccer fans".

Ugh. Nice try.

So according to that math, there are definitely 6,435 Germans who are NOT going to make that trip!

He's not exaggerating. I'd liken it to a lacrosse fan talking the Buffalo Bandits to the casual American sports fan; you won't get anywhere.

Love the greeting-the-fans video

Im always wondering why the players often "rush" off the ice after the final horn and mostly dont greet the fans when they win?? Or is that just not shown on tv?
