Souray will be another Rozsival/McCabe/Richards. He'll come here with this big slapper and suddenly be allergic to shooting.
Lol probably true... but we know Sather digs the "idea" of Souray.
I don't see a big deal for the Rangers that sends a core piece away before the draft. I think at best it's a tweak. Souray could be seen as low risk high reward. He's on a one yr deal
If general manager Glen Sather is interested in reuniting with Ryan Smyth by acquiring Edmonton’s veteran left wing to bolster the Rangers’ attack, the feeling may well be a reciprocal one, The Post has learned.
A well-placed source told The Post that Smyth, who was drafted sixth overall in 1994 by Sather and then played the first five years under his direction while he was general manager of the Oilers, would give serious consideration to waiving his no-move clause in order to pursue a Cup on Broadway.
Dallas took him off their PP. He has not seen 1 second of PP time the last 2 games

One of the things about Souray that's interesting is that he very rarely one-times the puck. He stops a pass, and then sends his monster slapshot on net. So is that allowing defenders too much time to get in his shooting lane?
``I don't think so,'' Gulutzan said. ``I agree, you want quick movement and you want quick release, but I think the reason Hammer isn't getting his shot through sometimes is because everybody is watching him every second he's out there. I think if we can do a better job as forwards pulling their people down and then get the puck back to the point, he can be more effective. Or, if they're going to stay up on him, we have to find the holes underneath.''
Well placed source. Newport Sports. Brooks has a good relationship with them. Sean Avery's agency.
Surprising Smyth is willing to waive. If he wants to play for the Rangers and only the Rangers, its Rangers or nothing for Edmonton.
If it was the Rangers or nothing, that would drastically bring his price down.
I'd take him on this team in 5 seconds if that was the case. Add Smyth and a PK/faceoff 3rd liner in Gaustad, Gordon, or Pahlsson and the forwards will be very deep for a playoff run.
If cap space permits, add a 5/6 vet dman as well. Dump Wolski, Christiansen, Mitchell, and Bickel. Sauer will probably be place on the LTIR if he condition doesn't improve as the trade deadline approaches.

Makes perfect sense to me, but then I did have Smyth to the Rangers as part of my predictions in the 5th edition of this thread, I believe.
If big guns like Ryan won't be moved till the summer, if the Yotes won't move Doan or Whitney, and if the price for Ruutu is a first round pick and more (ridiculous), then Smyth is a great fit for the Rangers. The cost will be low because the Oilers will take whatever they can get, especially if he is only willing to waive for 1-2 teams, and Smyth solves at least some of the Rangers problems for the rest of this season. Makes sense that he'd waive to come here, too. He wants a ring, and the Rangers are a contender in the weaker conference.
And then he can go back to EDM as a free agent. Or maybe even stay here on a cheap deal to end his career. Either way.
Count me in for Smyth, however I think some of you are dreaming if you think he's going to fix the power play. Great guy to have for screening the goalie and deflecting the puck but when no one shoots on our team what good is it?
I'd settle for Smyth only if we're giving up a third rd pick and some B level prospect. He would help, is way to slow to make any major impact on this team, although the PP would improve to some degree.
Smyth is really slow. He was never the greatest skater but he has slowed down. I was watching him last night in the Sam Gagner scoring fest. Smyth would give the Rangers net presence on the PP. That's always been his specialty. He is 36 years old.
LA could have gotten more for Smyth from Calgary but he wanted to be an Oiler. Something about Bleeding Oiler Blue. Sather knows Smyth very well. Knows his parents very well. He wants to finish his career in Edmonton but maybe he chooses to take a detour to NY joining Slats before concluding his career in Edmonton. Smyth controls the cards like McCabe did. It was Rangers or stay in FLA. McCabe wanted a longer term gig in NY but it didn't work. His wife is from LI and he has a home on LI. Smyth forced his trade from LA and he could tell Edmonton its NY or nothing if they want to rent him out for a few months and I'll be back in July.
Newport Sports leaked the Smyth story to Brooks to set parameters. Tells Sather that Smyth wants in and tells EDM he would waive for the Rangers.
