Rangers - Oilers

Fueled by the recent Smyth speculation, I thought I'd try to make a fair proposal for a few rental players from Edmonton:

To NYR:

Smyth
Sutton

To EDM:

Wolski
Zuccarello
Valentenko
conditional pick - 3rd 2012. 2nd if Rangers make conference finals.

Rangers need a top-6 winger and could use a veteran d-man for the playoffs.

Thoughts? I think this is more than enough coming from the Rangers. You're not getting any current key roster players for a couple of rentals. Woski, Zucc, and Valentenko are all RFA's after this season.

The Oilers would rather have a higher pick or one better prospect than volume. We have volume.

Not enough quality going Edmonton's way.

This is also under the assumption that Smyth would only waive his NTC to come to NY and play under Sather. That drives down his price significantly. I don't understand what oilers fans are expecting to get for a clear rental. There's no way he's not signing in Edmonton next season.

We are not expecting a huge return but there has to be enough of a return to justify the deal, it's like any other GM vs GM talk. There is no incentive to trade him unless they get something they value. Your package has volume but not what they would want.

that's just about right, if not, too much going to Edmonton. you guys aren't getting much better than that for a veteran UFA rental. you would be surprised by what you get for him.

Take Sutton and Valentenko out of the deal. Wolski has to go for cap purposes. Then take your pick of Zucc or a 3rd.

Wolksi will be released because he sucks, Zuccarello is no better than Omark, and Valentenko will probably go back to Russia since his career isnt going anywhere in NA.
I'd rather have Smyth stay an Oiler and have Suttons physical presence than have these three losers do nothing for our team and walk any ways. Smyth WILL be re-signed this off season, and there's been talk of re-signing Sutton as well.
Zero value for the Oilers and we take on a cap dump. The Rangers owe this organization for 1994 not the other way around

yeah, i was just comin back to say that Zucc, i would think, wouldn't interest the Oilers much because he's another Omark/Paajarvi type anyhow. they would want someone a little more proven.

The combo I vote for is
to NYR: Smyth + Edm 6th

To EDM: Wolski + Zuccarello + a 4th (straight up, not conditional)

I think the Oilers would rather keep Smyth then trade him for that return. A bunch of pieces they have no use for and a mid pick are worth less then the leadership Smyth provides.

Considering that Smyth is going to turn around and come right back to Edmonton during the offseason, I would think the deal is ok

Nothing about that trade is appealing. I'd rather do Smyth for the 4th.

We have a Zuccarello already in Omark.

Honestly if we can't get a 2nd or some sort of roster player that could help us next year there really is no reason to move Smyth.

Sure we aren't making the playoffs, but we don't want to show the kids on this team that we have no problem throwing the towel in when there is still a chance.

We have plenty of forwards, we need D. Zuccarello, Wolski...no thanks. If the Rangers have no D prospect they want to part with, it will have to be draft pick(s).

Why would Edmonton trade Smyth for two players that will never play a single game for the Oilers? Way to high of a price to move up from 153rd to 115? overall

Since Smyth is gonna return to you next season, a 4th is fine, and better than nothing.

I rather take nothing as Smyth's value to Eberle/Hall/RNH/Gagner is more than that.

Wolski = salary dump no big whoop I think his contract expires end of this year, I think.

Zuc is a throw in does not affect core value, Smyth for 4th.
If you don't want him fine.
You would think you could flip him for somebody, somewhere.

Again, not too high IF Smyth is just end of season rental.

You're entitled to that conclusion.

However, long term, Oils would be better with the better pick.
AND you are STILL getting Smyth back next season, so what you're concerned about is really only temporary. That's what you have to acknowledge.

Why would we take salary dumps to move up 40 spots? ST just isn't going to do that.

I'm sure other teams will offer more than a late 4th round pick for Smyth. Look what ATL gave up for Tkachuck at the deadline 3 or 4 years ago. Everyone knew that he was a pure rental.

Not going to move Smyth for a negative value asset in Wolski, and a 4th.

Minimum I'd think we move him for around a 2nd.
