Ryan Smyth controls the cards and can dictate terms. He can pick his destination. Slats and Smyth have a good relationship. Bryan McCabe was only interested in playing for the Rangers last February which lowered the price. 3rd round pick and Tim Kennedy.
What I'm getting at is it's going to increase, therefore long contracts such as Carter's won't be nearly as bad as people think in the later stages.
Not to mention his 11% increase makes no sense at all. Its not as if his cap hit is indexed to inflation. Its 5.2 now, it'll be 5.2 in ten years. All that matters is that the cap hit is a lower percentage each year and people are dreaming if they think it won't be higher than 64 million in a decade.
If you honestly think the cap will be continually increasing at that rate... sweet lord
The NHL is a league that culled back on its financial disparity through the cap. The initial numbers were at 39 million because of how unsteady league revenues had become due to unfair advantages to larger markets. Since the lockout, revenues have stayed the same or increased for the most part, leading to an increase in caps. But there is ALWAYS a ceiling. Hockey is a niche sport. The cap will hit an all-time high after the next CBA, but it will have to come down at some point seeing as how revenues likely won't expand that drastically. Also considering that in the next CBA discussions, both the owners and union will have to figure out how to address the growing disparity between cap floor and cap ceiling teams - it's getting closer and closer to the pre-lockout days.
Do you really think Burke is the kind of guy that needs/wants to do that? We have seen how he works, he's in their face and if they don't like it they can ....
Actually any GM in their right mind would not opperate that way.
I wasn't specific enough to include Burke, but he does play the media when he wants to. All I'm saying is that sometimes there are "leaks" and I suggest that these leaks are often planted by the GMs themselves to garner more interest around the league.
Not interested in him for the Leafs. He's too small and soft.
Although he had a brilliant night, I can't see his value dramatically increasing unless he can do it again or have a career year. He's still pretty much on pace for the same 40-50 points he's had for the last 4 seasons.
Well im sorry but with lots of games to go and the OBVIOUS difference in quality between these two teams, I think your out to lunch to say that just because they are close in the standings precludes them from deals together.
