How good is Cody Franson and what is he worth?

By Steve Minakakis

When the Leafs traded Robert Slaney and Brett Lebda for Cody Franson and Matthew Lombardi everyone thought the key to the deal was Franson. The Toronto Maple Leafs would take on the extra salary from Lombardi but in exchange Nashville had to give up a good young defenseman. Cody Franson, who is 24 years old, had 29 points in 80 regular season games, and six points in 12 playoff games last season. The Leafs weren't just getting a prospect in return, but an NHL ready defenseman who makes a mere 800k this season. Everything seemed to be going well until the season started and Cody Franson found himself a healthy scratch. On top of that, he publicly made known he felt that he deserved to play on a regular basis for the Leafs. This caused a bit of controversy, and suddenly things didn't seem as bright as they were in the off-season, which is when the Leafs made the trade.

How good is Cody Franson and what is he worth?

Out of that list,

Franson/Kulemin come after Grabo, but those three should be the priority.

Franson is a gem. He was criticized earlier in the year for being "soft" -- which was overblown, but he's changed his game. He's physical, smart, great skater, good first pass, unreal shot, etc.

Edit:

Gunnarsson (1.325) - Phaneuf (6.5)
Liles (3.875~) - Schenn (3.5)
Gardiner (1.16) - Franson (3~)
Komisarek (4.5)

Total = 23.86 million on defense. If the cap goes up, that's not bad... except your bottom pairing d-men are usually paid below 2 million. Frankly, we've got 6 good, top-4 dmen IMO. Komisarek probably too.

Can't stand this "he only played this many minutes, but if he played this many minutes, his numbers would be" stuff. If you're playing a certain amount of minutes, its because you probably deserve to play a certain amount of minutes, so what point is there in trying to fluff up numbers as the author does, in TORTURED fashion?

The resigning of Liles confuses the situation.

Franson is a young offensive dman and his booming hard shot is useful on a PP but the leafs have Phaneuf and Liles on rotation #1. Unlike Liles he is a big and can be physical but is not the best skater and not a shutdown defender. In fact, as a puck moving dman he is fourth behind Phaneuf (2 way defenseman), Liles, Gardiner, and then Franson.

The leafs need a few shutdown specialist defenders so Franson maybe dealt though I was thinking Liles would have been the one to be dealt.

I think Franson needs to be resigned. He has played well since getting a fair opportunity to start.

Franson shouldn't be going anywhere. After a rough couple of games and being a healthy scratch, he quickly proved that he should be with the big club. Unfortunately his staying means some tougher decisions down the road for Burkie, but it's a good problem to have.

Nailed the 6 D, Komi has to go though. Especially when talking about resigning these 3 guys.

We need to re-sign Franson, he is quite good.

I don't know how we're going to do it, but I really hope we keep him.

Franson has played well and has consistently improved as the year has progressed. He brings a lot of game to the table.

For long term, Leafs should keep Franson because he is young and still get rooms to develop. Unfortunately that BB signed Komi and stuck with his bad contract. Unless BB can trade Komi away to dump his salary for any draft pick, one of the D-man has to go.

About the shutdown defencmen, if BB can keep Schenn and Aulie I don't think we have any problem with that.

Franson is a keeper, should be re-signed and part of the long term plans of this team.

I think he's really become a solid two way defender with good offensive skills and a great shot.

He's been able to really use his size well and position him in good spots. I really hope they keep him

Agree with most of this, but Franson isnt a great skater at all. I would put his skating at average to poor.

Him and Schenn would be a close race.. Followed closely by Jason Allison.

I've been watching Franson closely since he cracked the lineup and he's definitely a keeper for me. The guy is great at moving the puck out of our end, is a crisp passer, has a heavy shot that rarely gets blocked and is not soft like some people said he was.

The man who suggested that does not watch hockey and has an aversion to guys with cool names...Like Gunner, probably thinking he/she is one of those artistic *lifts his pinky* you know what I mean types, with platinum season tickets but doesn't go...

I'm probably the 5th person to ask this but...why would we trade Gunnarsson before Komisarek???

Do you really think Burke, being the Pres and GM of the richest hockey team in the league, is gonna let salary dictate who plays on this team?????

Wow.
