No way he gives $5M+ to Ruutu (in cap dollars). If that were the case, he'd just pursue Parise. Might as well pay an extra $3M for a vastly superior player.
He's not going to get $5M at a flat rate. On a backloaded contract, it's possible; I mean, Ville Leino is making, what, $11.5M this season?
Well, that ends the speculation of Ruutu to SJ. Doug Wilson has said he's finished shipping out assets for rentals (finally), and since Pavelski only gets $4M there is no way Ruutu would get more.
It's called posturing.. He comes out asking for 5M, he'll get offered 4M and he and his suitors will meet half way with them offering a longer term for him to come down from 5M and meet half way.
I think people severely misunderstand what "$5M" is referring to.
$5M isn't necessarily what the cap hit would look like--Ruutu could have a 5 year contract that has a cap hit of $3M and still make $5M during that contract in a single year. Something like this (not related to what I posted prior):
Year 1: $5.5M
Year 2: $5M
Year 3: $5M
Year 4: $3.5M
Year 5: $3M
Isn't unreasonable at all. That's in the range of $4M-$4.5M, and he still makes $15.5M in the first three years.
5 million...this guy barely scrapes 20 goals getting first line ice time with Eric Staal.
Has Eric Staal turned into a bad player in one year, or is he just playing with trash?
Ruutu might be the most overrated 'gritty' forward I've ever encountered...just because Carolina sucks,he has an expiring contract, and everyone knows he is available, for soem reason everybody thinks this guy is the best 2nd line winger in the league.

That is 4.4 and reasonable, but I still think this is why the cap will be outrageous/out of control if every Tom, Dick and Harry can just ask for that and get it. It's everything that's wrong with the league. If it was more so south at 4.0 with an added year I could tolerate it if he were on a team I was a fan of.
5.0, 5.0, 4.0, 3.5, 3.5, 3.5 = 4.083
The new CBA should be out before players make demands.

Would it be insane to offer him 24.5 million over 7 years? 3.5 million cap hit, which is right around where he should be, but making 19.5 million in his first 4 years.
