edit : and yes, I would absolutely entertain moving Gionta this summer, but not a priority issue by no mean.
How is 29 goals a year an "ok 2nd liner? He's played 174 games as a Hab and scored 65 goals, that's a 30 goal pace over a full year...plus he brings a lot of intangibles. When you consider we probably paid a 500k UFA premium, he is a pretty good contract.

Plekanec is the same player he's pretty much always been, only problem this year they expect him to be a #1 center and don't give him #1 calibre wingers for the most part. Cammy had a brutal year until he was dealt and guys like Moen Darche and Blunden have spent a lot of time on that line.

That line of Cap Space-2nd round pick-2nd round pick will dominate next year.

2006/03/08 Montreal Canadiens traded Jose Theodore to the Colorado Avalanche for David Aebischer.

So Ilya Kovalchuk? or David Aebischer?

Again, First overall, Brassard, a roster player , plus a pick or player, you pull the trigger now IF you want a contender for next 10 years.

You want to keep spinning tires? then don't
Wasn't Markov supposed to be included in that trade as well?

So because Theo's game went in the crapper after winning the Hart trophy, we should immediately trade any franchise goalie we have in case his game goes to crap?

Brilliant!

Given that he has only 2 years left on his deal rather than the 4 Cole got, any outside replacement player would make almost as much on the cap for a longer term. So he's about right for a new UFA player. Because this tends to be the most overpaid class of player relative to value (because all you give up to get them is money) he is relatively overpaid compare to league average by say 1-2 million. Other players of a similar profile make less but you'd never get other teams to give them up because of their good value and you'd never get them to sign as a UFA for that total because they'd get much better offers elsewhere. Overpaid, like many things, has a context to it and doesn't exist as a Platonic ideal.

Gionta is a really good tough minutes winger (can play a solid defensive matchup and come out ahead of the game) and probably the best guy in the lineup to help Plekanec in the shutdown role, although Cole probably could do about as well with more of a bias towards offense than defense. This has good value even if he isn't scoring at a massive rate. So Gionta is worth keeping if you're planning on doing a quick retool and competing for the playoffs next season.

If you're planning a major rebuild and don't want to compete next year but instead rack up assets for the future, this off season it would be wise to move him because he is relatively old and could net some return for you. With a lot of things this off season what is and is not a good move depends mostly on what the new long term strategy is.
I completely agree with this post, especially the last paragraph.

However under Gauthier and Gainey we don't have a team identity OR a long term strategy, and they really go hand in hand.

So we rudderless ship continues wondering with Larry "moe Gainey and Pierre "curly Gauthier" at the helm....god help this once mighty ship.

Gionta isn't a guy that will be moved before the deadline because he will be useless to any playoff team that acquires him. If a move comes, it will be this summer.

I think, from what's been said at the time, that it was Theo, Markov, Zednik, and I think both our 1st rounders... Savard wanted to trade Garon instead of Theo, and supposedly that's what crashed the deal.

Absolutely! No one is going to take liberties with our smaller players if they know that they will have to deal with Hal Gill's fists of fury!

In all seriousness, this is a typical hf boards discussion, filled with exaggerations. Hal Gill is not an awful player, although his play seems to have declined this year. Anyone watching the Penguins-Red Wings game 7 would have noticed Gill on the ice during crucial situations. He also gave the Habs two solid seasons. That being said, he is not the ideal guy to have out on the ice in 5-on-5 situations, he is an older player and a UFA at the end of the season. Since the Canadiens are not making the playoffs this year, and Gill is not part of the Canadiens future (at least as a player), why not get something for him in a trade?

Do you know of any teams that are offering that package to the Canadiens?

They might not. If they're not, then I'm not trading him.

I'm not selling servicable players for nothing. It's a different thing if he's an impending UFA and we'd lose him for nothing (Souray, Streit, Koivu, Kovalev, Tanguay, Ryder etc. etc. etc.). But he's signed.

Trading Deadline 2012 Discussion (All Habs related rumors/trade talk here)

I'm not sure if there's a thread about this yet maybe we should start one.

I heard from a Radio that Tomas Plekanec could be available. The Rangers could be looking at him. As much as the fans semi-dislike Plek, he's highly reguarded around the league as a 2-3rd line center and can play in all situation. I would ask NYR for Brandon Dubinsky and a draft pick.

I've also heard Vancouver is looking at Travis Moen (even though he's on the IR). Hal Gill could have some interest from Philly and Pits. No one is interested in Gomez so likely we will buy him out like the Rangers did with Drury. Kostitsyn I've heard Nashville and SJ. I heard on another board that Jonathan Blum or Jamie McGinn are names we could get.

I'm not an insider just a random reader, so take it for what its worth.

I dont' think Subban is going anywhere. Subban, Tinordi and Beaulieu are three guys we build the defense.

That's why Columbus would not trade the 1st overall pick for a goalie.

Good to hear some different trade ideas for a change. Rangers get Plekanec makes them cup contenders. Hope we get Kreider...wanted him in his draft year. I rather take a first for AK instead of Blum. McGinn I don't know much about.

I'd take Dubinsky and a draft pick for Plecky. Duby can play the style that the Habs need right now and a draft pick, whether it's a 1st or 2nd is great. Plus you save 800k and pay Duby one year less than Plecky.

Yeah, the only way I'd let Plekanec go would be for Dubinsky but Rangers would never do this unless the Habs overpay.
