The whole thing should be seen as "who Hitchcock uses in what roles, and how successful they are in those roles."

Hitch's game can see a lot of slower forwards that are used to the traditional North/South game that like to hang back and cheat end up slowing the the tempo down.

Basically everyone is using their skates. IMO there is no use for slower forwards like Arnott that don't keep a high pace. Arnott has some talent still at his age for a North/South game but I don't think he has the speed to keep up with Hitch's system.

Kelly will be signing an extension with Boston soon enough...There goes that idea. To be honest, I never expected them to let him go anyway.

If we can find an upgrade over Berglund, I would be just fine with Sobotka as the 3rd line center. If we can't make a trade, maybe we can get Stoll or Jokinen on a short term deal.

Isn't Gaustad a FA too?

But yeah I'm expecting them to just go with Sobotka there which would be OK.

Yeah. I'd rather go with Sobotka than over spend on Gaustad. He is great on faceoffs and defense, but with our budget, for what he'll get, that money is best spent in other areas.

Well, you did happen to find a worse option than inking Sobotka as the center for the third line...

Gaustad was better for the Sabres than he was for Nashville. Can't believe they traded a first for that guy, that was a very bad deadline deal. Their first pick this year is a 3d they got by trading away their 3d last year; otherwise they sent their first for Gaustad, their second for Gill and their own third goes to Ottawa for Fisher. They also lose their 2d round pick next year (Gill).

Ouch. Did not realize the Preds had traded away so many picks.

Yeah they loaded up and went for it this year. I didn't think much of their acquisitions. Gaustad was poor for them. Gill was not worth the trade. Kostitsyn and Radulov are gone baby gone. Everything backfired and they lost a lot of quality picks. The Blues used to do that kind of stuff year after year after year and it never worked either. Fortunately for Nashville they've had a long run of solid drafting and I'm sure they'll learn from this and there'll be a hiccup but not much interruption in their solid track record developing talent, particularly defensive talent. It's annoying that this Josi kid looks as good as he does. They have been nailing their defense picks like nobody else.

Yep it backfired alright... I at their deadline deals. And Radulov was ya know, Radulov.

Yeah I saw that also, Kelly would have been a nice addition to the 'note.

Hindsight is 20/20. I admire that Nashville went all-in this year, even though it backfired. They could have just played it safe and kept their draft picks, but that would have sent the signal that the team isn't prepared to take risks to win the Cup.

On another note, I wonder if you guys think that Buffalo would do a Stewart for Roy trade, straight-up. I'm not bothered by Roy's size, and I think that he'll bounce back after a rough year. Plus, it's a fairly low-risk way of trying to solve our #1C and #3C problems.

EDIT: Capitalization.

I am a pretty big Derek Roy fan, especially because he can play in all situations. I just wonder if he will ever be the same player after the injury.

If management is ok with his size and believe that he can come back strong, I would love if we went after him. The only issue we would have is, we would have a pretty small offensive top 9.

Well free agency this year is gonna SUCK. Kelly just got 12 million over 3 years.

The only positive that I can think of the trade market will only get better for Stewart. There aren't a lot of available free agent wingers, and the ones that are out there will get crazy overpaid. Stewart RFA status and his off year will keep his salary down.

Yeah I never knew 3rd line centers were 4 million a year players. I'm hoping the cap goes down in the new deal to help the small market teams make money. If it does go down there will be a lot of teams hurting due to contracts like this. We would be in a good position going forward.

Well it would probably how it was implemented after the lockout and all contracts are rolled back by a percentage.

I'm starting to fear another lockout because if this is how free agency is gonna go, every mid and small market teams are screwed. I hope they get to work on a new CBA.

I think it is very likely that Sobotka will be our 3rd line center now. Even to get someone like Stoll, Jokinen, or someone older, you are going to have to pay.

Maybe Armstrong can make a trade for a center that bumps Berglund down to the 3rd line.

I think Cole and Russell will definitely be on the roster because of their low salary. I don't think there is any question about those 2 anymore.

So the rumor was wrong and it is 12 million over 4 years. I still think players will be overpaid, but at least 3rd line centers won't get 4 million per season.

Might be some hope in our free agency after all...

The report is actually 4yrs/12 mil, still that's freaking painful.

Hello NHL lockout. It only took stupid owners and GMs 7 years to ruin the league for small market teams.

Oh wait, it's 3M per? That's very reasonable. 3 x 4M is way over the top but we were paying Arnott 2.875M to be our #3 center and that's at an age Kelly will be when this contract is over.

I guess the silver lining is that Stewart @ 3.25 and Dagostini @1.7 may have alot more trade value now! I guess that's a good thing.

I can only imagine the contract that Jordan Staal is gonna get. Seriously doubt that we go after him now.
