Id also love to add a veteran top 6 forqard, soemone who wouldnt be impossible to acquire, someone who wouldnt cost too much. I think someone liek David Jones would be a great pickup. He's 27, is havign an off year this year but can put the puck in the net and he's a gritty player too. Scored 27 goals in 77 games last year, only has 12 in 48 this year, but with a center like Nielsen or Bailey he'd be a great fit and could really score a lot.

Tuomo Ruutu as well.
You're just fooling yourself if you think Snow will trade for a good player. We're either standing pat or selling.

I can't say for sure which way I'm leaning here. Comparing these Islanders to the 2007 team is like watching 2 fighters - the more consistent one (2007) can't throw a knockout punch but isn't lacking stamina, the current team won't swing as hard nine times in 10 but on that tenth try will offensively cold-**** like George McFly on Biff Tannen in Back To The Future 1.

This is to say, the prospect pool could benefit by folding, selling guys like Nabby & Parenteau while their value is high, acquiring picks potentially solid enough to walk on to the roster. (I doubt they'll sink fast enough to get in spitting distance of Nail Yakupov, but that's a different story.) BUT, Tavares would likely benefit even more from getting enough help to sneak into PO's or AT LEAST keep the effort sustained for all 82 games - a hungry John Tavares is a potentially near-unstoppable John Tavares.

To admit defeat earlier than necessary can either indicate a lack of confidence or a well-planned retreat/revise/attack strategy. For the sake of keeping face and attempting to improve the Isles' perception around the league, moves are going to have to be made. I hope they work out for both the immediate future and further on, like Holmgren blowing up the Flyers' roster last year likely will once they find a non-cursed goaltender.

Again - I don't think they'll make it in as much as I think the contribution from a more experienced JT could possibly trump the contribution of a few 2nd round picks while the question of the team's future in New York is in the air, bettering the chances of the team staying on or near Long Island.

Next few games are going to determine what we do at the deadline. A win tonight possibly puts us 6pts back with back to back games monday and tuesday. Nothing will be determined until after these next 3 games. Until then, there's no point talking about what's going to happen

The article below is not NYI related. It's about the Preds and how they are going for the SC this season. The pressure's on Poile, trying to win and at the same time convince Suter and Weber to stay.

I posted a my scepticism weeks ago ,when Suter announced extension talks were a team distraction and he would not be having anymore until the season ends. His comments and Parenteau's comments are imo, just another way of saying 'this player now wants to test the market'.I have no problem with that ,but think Snow has to get something of value for Parenteau.

Someone suggested Blum for Parenteau.23 yr old Blum played well in the Preds top 4 last season ,but has struggled his sophmore season.

We're not getting anywhere close to a Jonathan Blum for Parenteau.

Nashville's been put in a very tough spot by Suter who's a ufa this July and Weber ,who is a ufa in July 2013.Preds want to get both signed to extensions ,but the players are saying let's see what roster improvements are made to make the team a cup contender.

The press has said Tambellini has put a high price tag on Hemsky ,which may be why HNIC now says there is limited interest in Hemsky.Oiler fans are talking about a 1st and Ellis for Hemsky.I'mnot sure if someone credible reported that asking price.I hope that is what Tambellini is demanding.

It makes Parenteau for Blum seem reasonable

That scenario does make sense. To expand on it a bit, Nashville's organizational strength is also on the blue line. Blum is currently in the AHL and they just acquired Gill for the playoff run. Josi and Ellis may have surpassed Blum in the organizational depth chart so I could see him being dealt.

The Preds have not been mentioned as serious players in the Nash sweepstakes and Carter either. Poile has to go for it this year and Parenteau could really add some offensive punch, especially on their PP. They are totally built for playoff hockey with Rinne between the pipes and probably the best defense in the NHL. It just makes so much sense, doesn't it? That's also why it probably wouldn't happen. In any case, the idea of Blum does make you 'smell the fart'.

It's a tough position for the Preds because once Suter hits the ufa market and other teams can make their pitches ,you know higher profile teams like the Wings,Leafs and Rangers are going to be in the mix .
Imo the only chance the Preds have to keep Suter is to have deep playoff run, even if it falls short ,they need him to think they are on the verge of winning and have him willing to sign a new deal before July 1st.

I don't like the Preds chances of keeping Suter if he gets on the ufa market.Just like I don't like the isles chances of keeping Parenteau if he gets to July 1st and hasn't signed an extension.

What about PAP to Washington for Colorado's 1st round pick this year (currently 12th overall I think)?? My reasoning is that the Islanders are not going to be making the playoffs with the current defense and I doubt that Snow overpays for a quality defenseman. I also don't think that Snow will offer PAP a three to four year contract at $3 Million a year which PAP will get on the open market. If the Islanders could come out of this draft with 2 of the following 3 players (Trouba, Reinhart, Ceci) that will go a long way to helping our defense down the road and making us truly a competitve team. Just my two cents!!

I know its a pipe dream, but I really would want Derek Roy on this team. He would be perfect complement to Tavares, or as a 2nd line center. I would say trade Bailey+ for him, because with our plethora of Center prospects, he won't needed. And for those who say we need to get bigger, get over it. If you can score 70 points and be 5'10", I would be ecstatic

Trade deadline

I am sure there will be a large portion of people on this board (those who are perpetually focused on the future) that disagrees with what I am about to write...but I believe this trade deadline will show truly whether or not Garth Snow is a fraud when he says he wants to win/make the playoffs now.

Of course, if the Isles do not get at least 5 points (and more likely 6) from the next four games, this is all a moot point anyway. But these are winnable games coming up and if we can win 3 of 4, there is a good chance we are within 2-3 points of 8th and maybe even 5-6 behind 7th, with 19 games to go.

If that happens, and Snow trades PAP and/or especially Nabakov, he is clearly giving up on the season. In my mind, not only should we not be sellers, we should be buyers. At this point, we are 5 years in to this rebuild, so unless we have a top 3 pick, whoever we draft is not going to contribute anything for AT LEAST 2-3 years. Not only should be ABSOLUTELY be keeping Nabby and PAP, if we could get a guy in his prime who is signed beyond this season, I think there should be no hesitation to give up our 1st round pick + a top prospect for a Bobby Ryan type... or in a more likely situation, be willing to give up a second round pick and a prospect to get lets say a second line winger/center or #3 d-man.

If Snow gives up on this season with us only 2-3 points back of a playoff spot, any Isles fan who is willing to attend any game over the final 19 clearly does not value their money much.

I guess you're pretty much right. If the Isles are still in it Snow won't trade PAP and Nabby for picks and prospects, but if we're more than six points behind then he will do what he deems best and that may include keeping them both and maybe deal them at the draft.

If the status quo is upheld from now til the deadline I think he will have a quiet deadline day, perhaps making a minor deal or two but nothing significant.

Hmmm so you would rather gut the team to land a UFA that will be gone come July 1st all just to make a playoff run in which we most likely will not get in....and if we did be out in the 1st round?

Then we are weaker next year for gutting the team and losing that Big UFA we traded for.....

Sounds Great......:shake head

Would rather stay the course ....and add to the core....so the team will make the playoffs year after year...rather Then Being a One Timer......

If Nabby Is dealt.....yes...we will be losing our best goalie.....who might still not even want to be playing here...and has a handshake with Snow to go to a playoff team.....

As Fans ...we will never Know!!!!!!!

Nabby Plus could bring us a young Dman .....with great upside we are needing........

we all will find out soon......whatever happens........you hope it is a move that adds to the core of future players.

What can one expect with a building that is falling down and a team that is rebuilding for what seems 20 plus years....

It is Called Snow trying to Undo The Milbury Mistakes.......and that is not an easy job

If you are going to disagree, would you mind at least not making stuff up and putting words in my mouth... or at the very least actually reading my entire post. Where did I at any point say we should gut the team for an UFA? I said we should give up a 1st round pick and a top prospect to get a guy in his prime AND signed beyond this season...or...trade a second round pick and a prospect to get a guy (UFA or not) who is not a major difference maker but could play on the second line or second D pairing. You consider trading one draft pick and one prospect to be gutting the team? Even moreso if it brings back a Bobby Ryan type player as I mentioned?

One scenario would not be pretty is having July 1st swing around, we didn't come close to the playoffs (as most anyone could safely wager will be the case at this point) and PAP, Nabokov, Eaton and Jurcina simply sign elsewhere to contracts we really have no business dishing out anyway.

Still, I fear this is something Snow is willing to risk if we're still this close to a PO spot in a week's time.

Four games until trade deadline. Best case scenario we have 66 points with 20 games to play. Becoming buyers at this point is not totally out of the question.

In regards to losing those 4 to UFA (PAP, Nabokov, Eaton and Jurcina), I don't think it would be the end of the world as far as losing out on return. Of course, PAP is the best of the 4 and would be a huge blow to lose him in any way. This team is way past needing draft picks, much more important to win as many games as possible and start developing a winning atmosphere.

This system is incredibly deep. They can deal off Strome, Kabanov, Nilsson, Donnovan, Czikas and the 1st rounder & still have an excellent system. I'm not saying they should make any of those assets available, but it definitely wouldn't gut the team.

Upcoming free agents who aren't named Zach Parise and such do not have equal value to a #1 prospect.

Jonathon Blum is a much better skater and much more offensively gifted than Ty Wishart. Frankly, they are not even close to the same category even after Blum's rough start to the year that pushed him to the AHL. It's laughable to say that you don't want a player that has shown consistent promise throughout his progression to the NHL. Michael Del Zotto had a rough season last year. I'm not saying he's as good as MDZ, but you have to be patient with defensive prospects that don't suck. Wishart has declined ever since he was drafted. Blum hasn't. He hasn't made ridiculous progression, but he's been steady and I still think he has the makings of a top 4 defenseman. I watched him with Nashville last season and he is a miles better hockey player than Wishart.

We are not going to get something better than Blum. We are not going to get something as good as Blum, although I'm sure that's what it would take for Garth to pull the trigger. Count on Parenteau sticking with the Islanders past the deadline.

I don't think it's that far fetched that Paps could return Blum from Nashville. Nashville can afford to give him up with Ellis and Josi in their pipeline. Established young top-4 defenseman are gold in the NHL right now, but Nashville is really strong in that department. They just added Gill and I think they're looking good for a shot at the Cup. Adding an offensive player who busts his butt every shift into that lineup is an upgrade. PA would definitely help their PP and special teams play is a paramount in the playoffs. He's also pretty good in shootouts.

If Paps is dealt, it better be for a player that can contribute right away with upside for the future. A cost controlled asset like Blum kind of fits the bill quite nicely.

I don't compare Blum with Wishart. I think the Wishart attempt was failure and Blum would be too. If Blum is the only one we could get I would rather take picks.

It would be a very nice deal for us. Not exactly in favor of trading Parenteau but I'd take an offer of Blum easily if I was Garth. I'm just not sure Nashville would bite, but who knows.

I know almost nothing of Blum other than some info in passing. The last time I saw him play was in the WJC, I think it was the 2008. All I know is that he's a 1st rounder and he was awesome for the Vancouver Giants the two years after being drafted. I'm liking that he doesn't appear to be another Wishart from people who know something about him.

Roloson returned Wishart. Parenteau has more value in my mind than Rollie ever could have last year. I think anyone is an upgrade over Eaton, Mottau, Staios at this point. None are part of the future anyway. I definitely don't want another draft pick, even if it's a 1st.
