Would you rather have Matt Loughlin calling the games? I don't have any problem with Steve at all. He's trying to keep the Doc-esque format in place, seems to genuinely like being a part of the Devils broadcast team and gets along fabulously with everyone.
I think much like Larsson, he has a good foundation and will only get better as he grows more familiar with the team and calling the games.
Plus I think he'd see a thread like this and laugh more than anything.
Steve is a spectacularly nice guy, in a tough spot replacing a beloved Hall of Famer.
He cannot win here, as Doc has set the bar out of mortal reach.
I think he'd be the first to admit this is a work in progress (I actually think he is doing alright -- his call of the last Flyers game one of his stronger efforts of late), and I think it only fair he get the season to further develop his timing and chemistry with Chico -- the ultimate X-factor in broadcast partners.
Too soon to throw him under the bus, at the very least. And I am rooting for him, and enjoy talking with him at games. (He really is very cool, and genuinely grateful for the opportunity...)
Steve is a pretty cool guy in person and I've been pleased with the job he's done - he doesn't go overboard with anything, just keeps it simple and does his job and for an announcer I can't ask much more
He later went on to say, "the aforementioned Elliot made the save."
I thought it was a funny save. I remember hearing him call Elliot, Halak. Easy mistake to make after a change in goalie and then a period. Didn't like Steve at first but I like him more. At least he doesn't come off like an ******* like some other commentators.
We should have John Henessey and Randy Velischek be our broadcast team. I miss listening to those guys on the radio.
Loved those guys.
Just did a quick look-up, he's been UMass' hockey play by play guy for the past three years. I'd gladly take him over Loughlin. Everytime I listen to him on the radio the goal horn goes off before he even calls the goal.
Don't know if these have been mentioned, but here are some of my favorites...
- Bro-door
- Clawkson
- For-ster
- Moose Hedberg
- Referring to Kovy as simply "Ilya"
- Valchenkov
- Centering Try
- Mixing up #8 for #9 ... Even though Zach is 6'0 and Zubrus is 6'5...
There's probably a ton more, but these are just off the top of my head

Congratulations to Steve Cangialosi, who was nominated twice for a New York Emmy for on-camera talent (MSG+)
I'm watching a lot of games and he really does ok.
My favourites are probably SJ duo (Hahn-Remenda), though the Canadians on TSN/CBC are really a good group (Hughson, Miller...).
The Panthers guy is also a nice one I thought.
Red Wings are good as well.
I don't like very much CBJ but he's not that bad, just a style I don't like too much.
The funniest is Joanette for Buffalo, just to hear him shout "scooooooores"
The worst by far are Penguins and Rangers broadcasters.

Would I get a Shanaban for posting a puke picture?
Thank God someone corrected him. If I had to listen to that the entire game, I would've gone ****ing insane.
That and when he said Matt Carle was Marty St. Louis.
Marty St. Louis has a BRIGHT yellow stick that you can't miss.
I also absolutely hate when announcers confuse players when the incorrect player they said doesn't even shoot the way the player with the puck does. Like if Steve said Matteau instead of Bernier, Bernier is a righty there is absolutely no reason you should confuse the two.
Announcers are looking strictly at the number for reference. They don't look at stickhandling at all.
Easy to mix up 15 and 18 depending on the jersey's creasing.
In his days of backing up Doc, Steve would call pretty much anyone wearing 10-19 as Kovalchuk.
That and a Devils announcer by no means should confuse any Devils player when he's skating with the puck. After about three or four games, you can pretty much tell every Devils player differently from his skating alone.
Well, they should. When a guy is coming through the neutral zone, you can clearly see both how he shoots and his number. You should be able to use both, especially if you are unsure of who the player is. On the other team, I can understand, but not the team you are the play-by-play guy of.
