I wonder if Lindholm has sufficient size to replace our in situ 2nd line center, Sam Gagner. I would be intrigued by a duo of :

1st line center: Ryan Nugent-Hopkins
2nd line center: Elias Lindholm

But does Lindholm represent something that Gagner is not? Is he more than a 45-50 point man?
Slightly bigger size-wise (could grow more too), slightly more skilled and has a very well rounded physical 2-way game already. Not taking anything away from Gagner though. He's a skilled player but he's on the smaller size.

He better not... Drafting Sean Monohan over this guy seems absurd considering calgary hasn't had a franchise centre since Iginla was a Dallas Star

The only way Calgary wouldn't take him is if there were a couple of off-the-board picks and Barkov fell to them.

Interesting- I didn't have Lindholm at 5. You think he is the second best player in the Tier 2 players (ie Not Jones, Drouin, Mac) behind Barkov?

I can see Nashville going with either Barkov and Lindholm at #4, then Carolina takes Nichushkin at 5, and Calgary takes whoever is left at #6. Nashville and Calgary need a top end center, while Carolina probably won't mind taking on the big winger.

So Lindholm going #4 or #6 will be my bet, barring trades.

This is basically what I think + the Hurricanes very rarely draft Euros. Monahan could be their guy.

I've heard the Flames are very high on Lindholm. If he's there at 6, we'll pick him most likely. I see the Hurricanes going for Monahan or a defenceman.

I think the first 4 picks are basically set, it's at the Carolina pick where things will get interesting, which ever way they go has obvious implications for the rest of the top 10.

Agree with you, unless the Preds decide they like the idea of a Swedish connection with Forsberg. Might be some chance of this, perhaps.

Can Lindholm come in right away and play and who's a fair NHL comparison for him?

This is exactly it. The top 4 is pretty well set but there is thought, and with good reason, that Calgary Flames management likes Lindholm. Carolina could take Lindholm 5th but my thought is that after losing Sutter in the Stall trade they could take Monahan to give them a solid 2 way center with size. They may also need help on defence though and may grab Nurse. There pick will alter the outcome of the 6/7/8 picks for sure.

Could see him going to Nashville at 4. The Preds are the big wild card, but I would expect their top 3 targets to be Lindholm, Monahan and Shinkaruk.

Lindholm with Forsberg could be a dynamic Swedish Duo.

That would mean Nashville passing on one of Barkov, Mackinnon or Drouin (all of whom are rated higher than Lindholm)?

Needs a year or two in Sweden. Comparable is Patrice Bergeron

He could play right away and probably do pretty well. He is a pretty heavy guy and strong along the boards already. I think right now he's planning on staying a year in Brynäs but it probably depends on what team drafts him.

Oh god, I hope you're right. The best thing that could happen for the Flames would be for Nsh to take Shinkaruk and Carolina to grab a dman.

I wouldn't forget that Carolina did pick up Jordan Staal in the Brandon Sutter trade, which was basically an upgrade on the same type of player in the "solid 2 way center with size", department. Staal didn't have the best season with us last year, but he can normally be counted on for 50 points and fantastic two way play.

The only interesting thing is that Nichushkin and Semin share an agent, in regards to Carolina's pick. If Rutherford decides to take a gamble, there is a certain amount of comfort at the negotiation table considering the two deals we've hammered out with Semin and the fact that he's very happy here. Plus, a strong relationship with the agent might mean details that others aren't privy to. You never know.

With that said, the group of Monahan/Nichushkin/Lindholm is the clear cut second tier of forwards in my opinion after the Top 3 of MacKinnon/Drouin/Barkov. It's going to be hard to screw up a pick in the Top 7 or 8 this year if you count Nurse in that group.

If he is available I would be surprised if they passed on him. They do finally have one decent top 6 centre in Backlund but they need another.

There's Jankowski but even if he pans out if won't be for a while. And if Carolina takes Lindholm I would expect the Flames to take Monahan. Either way they should get a solid centre prospect.
