Insurance-Penner

Ok, I'm sure I'll get laughed at for this suggestion. I'm wondering if it wouldn't be an idea to make an offer for Penner. His value is at an all time low (rightfully so), but there's no doubt he is a skilled player. He's an UFA, and it sounds like Lombardi would happily trade him for a bag of pucks.

At the least it should keep the 13th forward position competitive, at best, maybe he pulls a "Souray".

Sure, I'd rather get Ryan Smyth, or the like...but if we can't...well, I'd rather have Penner on reserve than Hamill.

Sigh, I'm bored waiting for trade action...Blast away!

No No No No.... Would rather do nothing than pick up Penner.

Hard to believe he was such a hot commodity a few years back.

I think LAK keep him as they have little to gain trading him.

Seems like it would be a solid depth move for a third line LW to me. Yes his cap hit is currently pretty stupid for what he brings, but his cap hit matters little this year to the B's, and he sure won't get $4.25m next year if he does well enough that PC wants to bring him back.

Still rather have Ruutu, but if there's a huge difference in asking price, then I don't think Penner is a terrible idea. I've certainly heard worse suggestions.

I get where the OP is coming from, not a terrible idea. After all they just called up Josh Hennessey.

I'd rather do better, but his contract is expiring at the end of year, cap space is not an issue for the Bruins. It seems with Penner, just when you think he is a complete slug he starts playing good, just when you think he is good he turns into a complete slug. I'd look at it if there weren't better options and the price was cheap, which it should be.

That day will come. Not a new board but a new city and it WON'T be LA. I heard the city passed the Bostonian Exclusionary Act of 2009 after Bill Simmons showed up and started making up rules like he's Larry David. It's a direct democracy-imposed Survivah.

However, if every Boston winter was like this one, the future tropical home of Mr. and Mrs. FC would suddenly seem slightly less appealing.

The only insurance that Penner would bring Boston would be in keeping the fast food joints in business.

5 goals & 8 assists in 40+ games this season. This from a guy who started the season playing with Dustin Brown & Mike Richards (he's since dropped all the way to 4th line / healthy scratch duties).

You would hope to get a bit more than that from a 4 million per year player.

Oh, and let's not forget - he actually injured himself eating pancakes this season.

PASS!

Not bad idea if we could get him for really cheap.

He was playing like Lucic(last game Lucic) season ago with Hemsky.

He also seems to be great locker room guy.

Hell no, I'd rather keep Pouliot on the third line over him.

Point is, this year is a definite outlier. Penner isn't nearly old enough that I'd worry about permanent decline, and he wouldn't be our only player with certain consistency issues (Krejci springs to mind almost immediately).

If you always buy players at the height of performance you'll overpay. Penner's a great buy low candidate.

In fairness to Penner, it was a really big stack...

Penner is on the last year of his contract and according to Capgeek we can spend over 13m at the deadline. I wouldn't push for this move, but I wouldn't be against it.

PENNER???? I`d rather eat a Gomez contract before the Cecil Fielder of hockey is in a Bruins jersey. Rex was quicker, the most glaring issue for this team last year was foot speed, Penner is brutal, he`s a consummate floater. No bloody thanks, this team isn`t anywhere in NEED of anyone like this

Agree Odaat. He's Michael Ryder without the effort or work ethic.

and that`s frightening, I`d rather Chia absolutely stands pat rather than Penner, I don`t like the "make a move to say we made a move" kind of approaches, almost as irritating as the "we have 13 million in cap space, let`s spend it" kinda attitude.

There are so many more suitable options out there before Penner, I suspect that Chia will make moves that are along the "quieter" sort like the Pevs/Kelly one`s from last year, he has 17 guys returning from the Cup team, that`s 17 guys that he knows will absolutely go to war for one another, the fans and the organization, if he subtracts from the lineup, the only two candidates I can see moving are the one`s he hasn`t seen perform in a Bruin jersey in post season play......Poo or Corvo

I suffered a mild concussion yesterday afternoon after a stumble, so maybe I`m way off base but.......

What I'm saying is for a depth move the guy could be had on the cheap. If Horton isn't back for the playoffs, and another forward goes down, we need "someone" to step in as it doesn't appear we have a lot of strong candidates in Providence. I think Penner has more potential to score goals for us than Hamill/Caron (who also may be playing depending on potential injuries) You can never have too much depth.

I'm not talking about signing Penner with the idea of re-signing him. I agree with all the negative comments (slow, unmotivated, iHop champion, etc.). However, given the state of the "market", it's quite possible that there is very little for the Bruins to pick-up, given that other buyers have more assets to give up. The one benefit we do have is cap space. I don't agree with the comments that it would be better for Chia to "do nothing". We need NHL caliber players who can step in if "our" players get hurt. Dustin Penner is a proven NHL scorer. I'd rather have Ruutu, Smyth, etc., but if we can't, he is a better alternative than "nothing".
