Where would we be ???

Where would we be if 2007 1st round draft pick Alexei Cherepanov hadn't died.

It's really to bad that Cherepanov died that night in Russia some people compared him to Jagr and even if he had become half the player Jagr was we would be set for the long haul.

Just think how good the Ranger's young crop of players we would have--

Cherepanov--top 6 forward
Kreider--top 6 forward
Hagelin--top 9 forward--maybe top 6 forward
Miller--top 9 forward--maybe top 6 forward
Fasth--top 9 forward
Thomas--top 9 forward
Bourque--possible top 9 forward
Yogan--possible top 9 forward
I know there's a few more but most fans will agree with this list

Then of course we still have

Cally
Dubi
Stepan
AA

Just to name a few,

I'm not saying one player makes a team but Cherepanov death did set this team back a few years but the future is still bright with young players trying to push the vets in the next year or so.

Not only do we have multiple young guns but trades chips for this years deadline and maybe next years.

Good time to be a Ranger fan.

Flame away if you must.

Was he a LW? We'd be pretty set for the long haul if he was.

You never know what could have been. He could have never panned out or got injured first shift.

Only thing to say about the kid is how sad it is that his life ended so early.

Cherepanov had Semin like potential imo. If he had Jagr like potential, he would have gone higher in the draft despite the rumors of the Russian-USA agreement.

Still, he would have helped us out huge. Just a shame he died and from what the blogs say, he shouldn't have ever played hockey with the condition he had in the first place. How could they have missed something like that?

We drafted Stepan with the compensation pick from Cherepanov. All things considered we would probably not have Steps had Cherry not passed away.

Edit - As others have pointed out, it seems the compensation pick was for the 2009 draft where we got Ethan Werek 47th overall. Make sense anyways since its the same pick in the next round (17th overall pick + 1 round = 47th overall pick)

There was speculation it was a condition that developed after he was drafted. It's hard to get concrete information because there are conflicting reports about the whole thing
