Anthony Stewart?

Carolina has put him on waivers.... he's 6'3", about 230 pounds, on a deal which has a $900K cap hit this season and next. He's big, and has untapped potential in some peoples eyes, though he'll not likely be a top 6 presence as people thought he might be.

Given how few sellers there are at the deadline, and how much the price points may go up for big guys, does anyone think claiming this guy may make some sense?

To me, it seems like an alright move... the only issue is a roster spot seems to be hard to come by.

Thoughts?

Wish Carolina would just take Lombardi + pick for him.. I'd be sold.

Agreed. Claim him and stick him in the minors to see if Eakins can get this guy going.

You claim him to play in the NHL, not the AHL.

So if he's claimed, you'll have to re-waive him if you want him in the AHL.

It's not something GM's do when they claim a player. The purpose of claiming a player is because you need him on your NHL team.

Since the Leafs have no space or need for Stewart, then that means he won't get claimed.

Kind of my thoughts - if he gets to us on a waiver claim, send him down for the rest of the season, and see if you can kick start him. Maybe it lights a fire under him, next season he comes in and is a decent 3rd liner. All it costs is money!

Claim him. Guy's a very underrated grinder. I'd stick him in the line up over Crabb right now and I love Crabb.

Big massive winger with great first round pedigree just like Burke would love. Except his defensive and offensive game leave much to be desired and he is the type of player you dont' want your first rounders to become.

He was drafted ahead of Perry, Bergeron, Weber and Boyle but won't amount to much beyond a third/fourth line plugger. Like Crabb with size but not a great PKer.

I like him, but he's a 3rd/4th liner and there's no roster spot for him right now.

Only way I could see him being claimed is if we trade Crabb for a pick or something. Crabb is working hard and grinding well, so I don't see a shakeup imminent there.

I'd love him on the team, but don't think we got room. I can see most teams wanting to claim him, so I'm sure another team will.

Not sure now. Sprdave has me second guessing. I am trying to remember when players were claimed and then waived for the minors. Maybe if he played so many games in Carolina's system?

Damn, what happened to this guy? He seemed to finally be coming along with the Thrashers last year (14G, 39 PTS) and developing into a PF, and then this year he stinks it up. Sad, a former 1st rounder from that amazing 2003 draft too.

You don't have to keep him on your roster.

Brett MacLean was waived by Phoenix at the beginning of the year and claimed by Winnipeg.

A few weeks later, MacLean was waived again by Winnipeg and re-claimed by Phoenix.

The point is that you don't claim a player, just to re-waive him because he might a good player for your farm team. You claim him because you need him for your NHL team at the time being at least. Considering Burke is a players GM, the Leafs would never do that even if they needed him on the Marlies.

Well, I am not talking about the Marlies needing him. I am talking about a reclamation project aka Macarther and Lupul.

Fine, lets get him and put him in and out of the line up while he re invents himself again.

I just like the guy. Good size and good person. Not sure how Carolina ended up with this happening. Maybe there were lockerroom issues. He can play.

It's just a case of a player that needs to pass through waivers to get to the minors. If the Leafs claim him for their AHL team, then they would have to put him on waivers to send him down. Plus, if you need to clear a roster spot for him, before claiming him, and possibly making room on the cap, depending on the cap hit.

Just doesn't seem worth it, just to pick up a project.

If he can't play for Carolina, he can't play for the Leafs.

Let's just be clear here...

He's a depth forward that can't crack a bottom team.

I like Stewart - He could be on a Power Forward career path like Todd Bertuzzi.

He looked like he was ready to take the next step as mentioned above.

I'd prefer taking a gamble on Zach Hamill.
