I thought about that too, but I'm not sure it's 100% correct. I mean, it's an NHL member club and they're NHL pucks. For all I know, they may have a massive supply. Or, as you suggested, perhaps it's somewhat limited and it would bump up cost, I just dont know.
That's one of those little business intricacies that would be interesting to know though, how are NHL game pucks distributed and do you get them all in October, or does the NHL ship them monthly for game use, etc? Also, am I a complete freak for finding little mundane questions like this so fascinating?
Have you ever heard the stories about how baseballs are prepared for MLB use? Very interesting stuff.
I'd have to assume their given lots of 25-50 or something and just tell someone when they are running out. I'm sure there's a minimum to have on hand per game. Maybe we can find a game-day ops person for this?

Different sport, but I know the Red Bulls have boxes of uninflated game balls ready. I would not be surprised if the Devils are sitting on 500+ game pucks. That said, I doubt they have enough to do mystery puck nights. Plus I alread have all the players I want on game pucks so I don't care :sarcasm"

I wouldn't mind trading my Elias mystery puck for a Kovy-Brodeur-Parise since I already have an Elias/Zajac signed picture (won it at a viewing party) and also have an Elias signature on my jersey

Last time I went to mystery puck I went with a couple friends to get a boatload. I ended up with Marty, Leblond, Fraser, Salvador, Greene and Mottau. So basically I got Marty and 5 others I couldn't trade for a Clarkson my brother wanted
i personally had no problem with the 6 p.m. start time and actually prefer an earlier start time. i'm sure this is one of those things that you won't be able to please everybody. as i said, the bbq was great to get pictures and i was able to get just about everybody and this was good to get a few autographs.
I'm a 16 year season ticket holder and it was a pain in the old days and more difficult now. I work in the city and it's increasingly difficult to get out and to Newark for 6PM especially if a meeting runs late.

I know for a fact that the Devils have a lot of pucks sitting around.. I was helping them move into the PruCenter storage rooms this past summer and one of the boxes was all Stevens auto's (with like 10 empty boxes of 40+ pucks)
But they give a lot away during the season for charity events, viewing parties, in-game contests, etc

I was referring to game pucks but that is interesting. Do you recall what logo was on the front of the pucks?
lol, a few years back I had Parise and Zajac both sign some 1986-87 poster the Devils were giving away during the 25th anniversary cause that was pretty much all I had for them to sign after the game. Needless to say, I wasn't looking to turn a profit either but still wish it was something more relevant to them or the current era.

If I had to guess, I would say you probably get a large shipment before the season and then get additional shipments, either set on a schedule of being X games/weeks/months into the season, or by updating them on your inventory and they will send more at a certain threshold. That's how it works for the league required dasherboards. The ones you see in the corners (NHL Network, NHL.com, or NBC Sports/CBC for games on those networks) are the ones required by the league. They send you more when you reach a certain point in your inventory or if there is a specific change in creative/specific event requiring certain dashers. I would assume the pucks work along the same lines, just with a different department. The semester I interned with a sponsorship department of an NHL team that's how it worked. In October we were specifically sent 4 "Hockey Fights Cancer" dashers for example. For the NHL Network/NHL.com type dashers, we would get more when we informed them that we were running low. Once they contacted all teams to provide the current inventory and they sent them out later on since they could figure out roughly when we would need more.

I've worked plenty of Game-Day Ops in my time, but unfortunately not in hockey. I can't answer about pucks, but I would assume its the same as baseball or soccer would be. For baseball (albeit a minor league team) they just had a ton of new, official baseballs on hand. No idea how they re-stocked, but given the fact it was minor leagues, they probably had more than enough for the season, and if they were to run "low" they would address it then.
For the Red Bulls, they have tons of soccer balls on hand. I remember last season when we got more in at a certain point. The thing that I can't recall is if the league provides them, if the team buys them and the league reimburses the expense, or if it is the responsibility of the team (and every team) to have enough official game balls for their home games. I do know that the teams get them at a largely discounted price from the retail price. Any of those three seem reasonable, as it keeps it standard around the league. Any old balls (previous year, or well "used" ones) just become practice/warm-up balls for MLS games or even other events potentially as long as there is no sponsorship conflict preventing the use of such adidas soccer balls.

Wouldn't surprise me. Any team I've interned for always has a large storage area of autographed items of current players and/or alumni. There is also a stock of general items like you would see in team gift packs. Usually these closets are those of marketing departments, but are accessed by a number of groups (sales, marketing, sponsorships, etc). But I would assume many teams have similar areas.

I'm not well versed enough in every given layout/set of logos to remember for certain, but I want to say the signed items I have seen are usually rather generic team logo balls/pucks/whatever. I don't think I've seen official NHL game pucks in that regard, although baseballs may have been official.

Speaking of having auto's on irrelevant items... August, 1987. Ottawa. Had tickets to Canada Cup exhibition game btw Canada / USA. While standing in line at the old Ottawa Civic Centre, spied Devils coach Doug Carpenter. As a 14 year old kid on vacation, of course I brought along a stash of hockey magazines to read (again) while on the trip. I sprinted back to our RV because I knew I had an old GOAL magazine with a Carpenter article. Couldn't find it to save my life, but I grabbed one with a Greg Adams article. Got back, approached Carpenter, who gave the article an odd look, but signed it anyway. The Devils traded Adams for Patrik Sundstrom within a couple of weeks. Looking back, got the impression Carpenter knew it was coming. Bad enough he was signing someone else's article, but a soon to be ex-Devil.
This is that time of year when I refresh my inbox every 5 minutes and call home to see if any mail came in the hopes of news about renewals coming out.. I'm guessing we're about a week away though

Ya it needs to hurry up already! I just gotta know!
My accoun is updated with invoices. $35 a game for rounds 1 & 2 to sit in the corners seems somewhat steep. Corner sections went up to $17 a game for next season.
They're doing a giveaway starting tomorrow & you'll be entered to win when you pay in full. They have a cheer now, pay later for this years playoffs and similar choices based on the years you've been a ticket holder

Looks like the $22 season tickets are going up to $24 next year. Good move by the Devils to not try to bump those up too much at once.
On the other hand, it looks like the st cost for the first two rounds of the playoffs will be $50? I have a feeling a LOT of sths won't bother as you know you will be able to get them cheaper as the games approach. Of course, buying them is the only way to guarantee that you will have tix for the Finals
