Very rarely are people from Manhattan going to come to NJ for a hockey game because it's "College Night"...I just don't see it happening. Most of the times it's the surrounding area colleges as the scoreboard tells you who's in attendance.
I think very rare is not accurate.
Lots of students in Manhattan are from NJ.

I am not suggesting thousands, but if even 50 come over it's 50 less empty seats.
How many times have you taken the PATH or NJ Transit to Manhattan following a Devils game?

That doesn't mean they're going to come over here for a game.

Never, that would be in the opposite direction of my location home. How many of those people you may see are college kids though?

I can play the question game too.

Would you like me to take a census next game?

Not sure why you are so negative with this topic, bad morning?

No thanks.

I find the college kids to be extremely annoying and obnoxious at games. I also don't think there's many coming from Manhattan as you would like to claim.

And my morning is busy...

I go to Seton Hall now (grad school). Unless there is some sort of regular shuttle to the South Orange train station (I have no idea if there is, since I commute), that's not an easy walk. Probably a 15 minute walk from campus, but its not exactly the ideal location to be walking at night sometimes. At least there's been enough incidents in the past that I doubt people would be too keen on it. Yes, that means a train station is near by, but its not realistic to get more than a few people who are already huge fans. I already went over the issue for MSU in my post before as I had to deal with that one all the time. My family has full seasons, but when they weren't going I had enough issues getting there. If they weren't selling the tickets I would have them and even though I knew people who wanted to go, getting there wasn't always easy because of how infrequent the trains were (especially with the days they don't run altogether).

This. Yes, its relatively close as the train from NY Penn to Newark Penn is about 20 minutes. I'm sure the Path is about the same even though I've never taken it to/from Newark. But its not realistic to assume you'll get many people from NY. There is so much to do in NY that the only people you are likely getting to come by are those who were already fans, regardless of whether or not they're from NJ. These are the people that would have tried to go anyway if they could. You're not likely attracting new fans/large numbers from that area.

Hi!

I'm coming down to NYC for Easter weekend and, of course, since my Sens are playing in the vicinity, I'll be taking in the game at the Prudential Center on April 7.

Couple of questions - I've seen I can take NJ transit from Penn Station NY to Newark Penn, or use PATH. There's a PATH stop closer to where I'm staying (Chinatown), but looks like I would have to transfer at GRV....any comments on which is better? Probably NJ transit eh? It's a 3:00 pm game on a Saturday, if that matters.

Also, I've read the thread and see lots of complaints over the closing of some of the concessions at the arena - is there anything good left that I should check out? And by good I mean something other than the typical hot dog/pizza slice/popcorn you can find anywhere? When I go to a new arena I like to try something typical to the area.

Finally, I see Guinness on the list of beers sold there - any particular spot I need to go to get it, or is it wherever?

Thanks in advance, very excited to come down!

I would check out some of the bars/restaurants outside of the arena for food choices. It's a much better selection. Just make a reservation for a place because it could get crowded.

I'm not well versed in the transportation situation so I'll leave that open.

It's really a Crap shoot when it comes down to which is better. If you don't mind spending the extra money, go with njtransit as the path runs slower in the afternoon. Each puts you in the same spot with the same walk.

Chinatown isn't near Penn Station in Midtown.

If you're near the Village you would need to transfer on that line from that PATH stop, and it takes a while since it's a Saturday and it makes an additional layover stop. http://www.panynj.gov/path/maps.html

Best bet would be to either walk down to the World Trade Center site and take the PATH from there(no transfers required) or take a subway down to WTC and take the PATH(I'd like to know where exactly you're staying though).

Guinness is sold (bottled) inside the arena in the Acela Club restaurant or in a stand by Sections 15/16 on the main concourse.
There may be other stands that I am not aware of.

A bar next door to The Rock, Edison Ale House, pours Guinness.

You could easily **** up on the path though. Its easier and more direct to get to "penn station in midtown" im trying not to get folks who aren't familiar lost.

I'll email the Devils and ask them to only offer the College Night promo to students that attend NJ colleges.

Well, the ones in NY can come anyway, regardless of whether or not they're Devils fans. The whole '3 home areners, brah' thing could apply.

Yes, and the one aspect of PayGo that people forget (or at least it hasnt been mentioned yet) is that they ALSO got a $100 food and beverage card!

That, and the fact that the Devils psychologically destroyed the value of the ticket when they made center ice the same. It's like asking someone to pay X dollars for a Honda, when they look next to them and see a bunch of other people paid the same amount for a BMW. IMO, the Devils brass often does a very poor job of "thinking things through". But you have to understand, they also clearly care more about maximizing revenue (even in miserly fashion) than filling the building.

Probably. I mean, if Mommy and Daddy can afford NYU or Columbia, I doubt you care much about saving $15 on a ticket every once in a while.

Correct answer (you cant take a subway from Chinatown to WTC though).

However, if you're a tourist, there's a solid chance you'll be in midtown before departing for the game anyway, in which case, take NJTRANSIT from Penn. Then, after the game you can take the PATH back to WTC and be near Chinatown (NJTRANSIT and PATH are located in the same train station in Newark).

Thanks so much for the advice everyone - good point on probably being in Midtown before the game, that's pretty likely. Think I'll do what you said, BenedictGomez, and take NJTransit down, then PATH back to WTC.

I'm in section 15, so good to know there is Guinness close by

I'm excited to see Volchie...he has always been one of my favourites, and I miss him. Also hoping this is a game with some standings implications to make it a bit more intense!

for food if you don't hit up some of the places outside the arena (some are really great, save you some money too): from section 15 you'll want to head straight upstairs to the 2nd level concourse in your end and hit the Taste of Newark stands.

Since the beginning of the season. Both Hobby's and Jimmy Buff's didn't renew their contracts.

Well, there's still stuff in the Taste of Newark space. It just isn't Hobby's and Jimmy Buff's any longer. But there are still food options in that space. They have deli sandwiches (far inferior to Hobby's, but still...) and they have gyros and Greek salads, both of which my wife likes quite a lot. I believe they also serve Italian sausages or something, too. They also serve BBQ sandwiches, both pork (which is really good) and chicken (which I haven't tried).

The Gyro Zone is the same guys from the last few years, right?

I also don't notice a difference between Jimmy Buff's and what is there now.

Hobby's is sorely missed however.

Hobby's is a killer not having that there.

The new "Italian hot dog" place I have yet to try - and will not try.

That's just ****ed up what they did there - jack up the rental price on the place and when they don't renew just replace it with your own folks selling the same exact **** hoping no one notices.
