Do not mind the Vermette talk, but more interested in a straight up Martin for Umberger deal. Don't know how RJ would feel having established himself in Columbus after going to OSU and the like. However, he'd be a perfect fit in the 'burgh. Subsequently, I'd rather have Gaustad than Vermette. He just fits the needs better. Having Gaustad to center the 3rd line, enable Staal to play on the wing with potentially Crosby and Umberger.......Wouldn't want to play a series against.....Kunitz--Malkin--Neal, Staal--Crosby--Umberger, Cooke--Gaustad--Sullivan, and Adams--Vitale/Jeffrey--Dupuis.
The key is "just any help." Reply was to an offer including Nisky and Strait - which might seem like fair value, but doesn't really address need from a skill-set perspective for CBJ. Jackets don't need to trade Vermette, and if they're going to, should be looking to get a return that brings as little overlap in skill-set as possible. Thus why Martin was third in my original reply on the subject beneath Orpik and Michalek.
I apologize for painting with grays instead of blacks and whites. It can be a tricky thing on the interwebs.
As to the notion of RJU's availablility, along with Vermette, now we're definitely talking Michalek. I doubt he's available.
Just spitballing here, but what is the ?? in RJU + Vermette + ?? with Michalek + Tangradi + Kennedy?
Very reasonable post. I'd say the salary wouldn't work out for us with that offer. Michalek is likely unavailable. Martin for Vermette works for me.
