Crosby may be the answer to our #1 center problem, and we should keep the cap space open as he will be a UFA after next season.
OK, now before I get flamed, please hear me out and keep an open mind.
First of all, this is still a long shot. No doubt. But I think the chances of Crosby not resigning with the Penguins went from about 0% to maybe 10% or higher.
There have been multiple reports indicating that Crosby is now un-insurable, or that the premium would be 90% of the contract value so there is no point in trying to insure him. So basically when he gets a new contract the team signing it will be on the hook for all of it no matter what happens.
It has been suggested that signing a 3-5 year deal as opposed to a 10-15 year might be the only option for the Pens. They are not a rich franchise and the risks on a long term deal would be too much.
Pens insiders are saying that Brisson (Crosby's agent) would never go for a 3-5 year deal.
So which teams have the money and the risk tolerance to take a long term deal on Crosby with no insurance? There are not that many.
I can think of one for sure. That just so happens to be in need of a #1 center.
