Changing playoff series home ice order

http://www.tampabay.com/blogs/lightn...antage/2174918

Tampa Bay's coach is thinking of suggesting a change to the order that games are played at home:

Game 1 -- lower seed
Games 2, 3, 4 -- higher seed
Game 5 -- lower seed
Game 6 -- higher seed
Game 7 -- lower seed

Quote:
"Now that's home ice to me," Cooper said. "I haven't done the research but I'm fairly certain more series are ended in Games 4, 5 and 6 than Game 7, so why would the home ice be in just the last game?"
Not sure the lower seed teams would be happy with potentially one less home game if there's a sweep.

Pretty sure the way it is is to guarantee both teams 2 games of gate revenue in a sweep. Then you just alternate the three remaining ones.

All 7 games at home for the higher seed. Now that's home ice advantage.

I think it's fine the way it is, honestly.

Game 1 I could get behind. I hate opening at home. All the pressure is on the home team. It's really not much of an advantage.

Game 7 should always go to the higher seed.

The Pens and Caps played a 1-2-2-1-1 series in 2000 due to scheduling conflicts.

Would be interesting. But the current method is best.

Game 1 and 7 go to the lower seed? No way.

The only other system that could possibly make sense is the 2-3-2.

Game 7 should go to the higher seed. I'd rather start on the road though. I'd be for something like.

2-3-2 works well for baseball. Not sure how it would go for the NHL. I agree that if I was the higher seed, I wouldn't want GM 1 at home.

The problem with 2-3-2 is that it gives the lower seed the possibility of one more home date, should the series go five games. The popularity with 2-2-1-1-1, despite the travel, is that it ensures that the lower seed never plays at home more than the higher seed.

Well, Cooper's wrong.
Since the lockout we've had 33 Game Sevens versus 16 sweeps.

The current system is OK (2-2-1-1-1), but they could save on travel costs with 2-3-2 (as they did with Rimouski-Blainville due to scheduling conflicts at the Océanic's Colisée).

I think I like that better. Both teams still get two home games in a sweep, and yet the higher seed is now playing at home for three out of a possible four elimination games (4, 5, 6, 7) rather than two (4, 5, 6, 7).

second change is a far, far greater advantage than any pressure ever could be

If a change was to be made, I like that one, but I have no problem with the way it is now. The advantage is that it's not possible for your opponent to play more home games than you. That's advantage enough.

I like it the way it is for the hockey side, and for the business side. You get in the playoffs, you get two home games guaranteed.

I think the higher seed should always get the first and last game at least.

The way it is, is perfect.

That's why his proposed scheme will never happen. Back when there was a glimmer of hope for the Coyotes, the subject of revenue for two playoff games came up repeatedly. Not many fans realistically thought that team had a chance of winning a series against the top seed.

I like 2-3-2 that baseball uses, although it's a big disadvantage for the team with the middle three games.

Im good with how it is now. IF any change were to be made, 1st and last should be home.

it was pretty huge for the phillies in 2008. they took a game in tampa and managed a sweep of the three games in philly. baseball is an interesting case though because homefield advantage is determined by whichever league wins the all-star game.

i would leave the NHL's system untouched but an adjustment to the rules wouldn't be the end of the world.
