Joni Pitkanen for Top Line Winger

I know a lot of Canes fans feel like losing Pitkanen would be a terrible idea, and that's fine if you feel that way; you have a valid reason for thinking that way. However, with McBain, Faulk, Murphy, Dumoulin, and Sanguinette in the system, and the fact the Canes desperately need a top line winger, I think Pitkanen becomes expendable (considering he would bring back the greatest return).

It WAS rumored Pitkanen was being shopped before he was injured this year.

http://www.thefourthperiod.com/news/car120108.html
"The GM was also trying to deal blueliner Joni Pitkanen, who has two years remaining on his contract with a cap hit of $4.5 million, before he underwent knee surgery last week."

If Pitkanen alone isn't enough (depending on who is coming Carolina's way) feel free to add any of our picks/prospects in the proposal.

Did you forget Ballard?

No way I would move Pitkanen for this return.

raymond + ballard and a second?
haven't watched him play much so value could be TOTALLY off.

Also, I know the stereotypical Ballard trade but I think this one makes more sense then most.

I do like Stewart, though haven't his numbers dropped..? Could be wrong..

And.. I don't know.. I think we need someone who can FINISH, playing alongside Staal - more of a sniper-type player.

Ribeiro? he has been a PPG player since his time in Dallas. Something may have to be added by Carolina though.

I stand by the belief that it doesn't matter who we stick beside Staal. Over the past 3-4 years, he's had a dozen different wingers, each playing a different style. And his point totals have generally remained the same. Staal's play lies entirely on Staal.

Though if we were going to find him a winger, I think a playmaking type (in the mold of Whitney/Stillman) would be more beneficial to him than another shooter. Since Staal is a shoot-first player himself.

Yeah, I suppose you're right. Honestly, I wouldn't complain about any TRUE first line winger JR was able to get.

You're not getting a franchise goalie under contract for a few more years and a top pairing defenseman signed to a very reasonable contract for a guy who's going to walk in a couple of months.

I hope that was a joke, but it can be hard to tell on hf sometimes.

Hudler + high pick? He does have 17 goals, on pace for 25, playing on the 3rd line.

The reason i proposed Ribeiro is because i though Staal used to play wing back in the day.

I was kidding.

I want Pitkanen on the Devils. What would it take?

Detroit and Carolina are about as unlikely of trade partners as you can get. Plus, Hudler is a ufa whom I'm not sure would want to sign in Carolina. Pitkanen is on a very reasonable deal, and Hudler doesn't carry enough value as an impending ufa with flight issues to make the deal happen. A high pick from Detroit is practically a second anyway so no way would Carolina deal Pitkanen for a 2nd and Hudler.

Isn't Philly looking for a dman? I suppose they aren't interested in a return of Pits, though.. Correct?

Don't need the type of defender Pitkanen is. I like Joni as a player, but he wouldn't really be a fit on our blue line.

We need a defensive defender who's can clear the crease.

I see.

Off topic a bit on this thread, but would you guys be interested in Spacek? Maybe Allen?

I just want to point out that Pitkanen is not a free agent this summer. We're talking about trading for a borderline #1/good #2 defenseman who's locked into a very good contract.

What about a deal centered around Joni Pitkanen and Justin Williams?

I know, I know.. more recycling - but honestly, Williams is the kind of player the Hurricanes need. Reasonable contract..right handed shot, can definitely play on the top line with Staal. Just a thought..
