Yeah, our forwards had played a few solid games defensively recently, but today they were back to normal. Hartnell did his job defensively, other than that pretty much everyone has to do better.

I have been saying since the start of the season, the defense is the worst in the NHL. It's not even close. There is no one in the league as soft as the flyers defense.

Lets take a look at the problems

Kimmo timmonen - Fantastic defenseman, solid in every area of the game, isn't going to clear the crease though. Would make a fantastic defensive parter to a shutdown D.

Coburn - Only shows up in the play-offs. Has the size, but no idea how to use it. Probably the softest player on the team. Don't think I have ever seen him make a hit.

Mezaros - The perfect complimentary player. Again, has good offensive smarts, but needs a solid defensive player to back him up, as Sean OD did in his first year here.

Matt Carle - The worst defensive player on the team bar none. Is physically out matched in every game with larger forwards. Looks so awful in defense against tough teams.

Bourdon / Gust - Learning their trade, to expect these guys to play well is crazy. Hell, one of them wasn't even drafted.
That is not even touching our d's problems in the offensive end. Either their shots get blocked or they are too nervous to shoot and make a horrible pass. Add to that, the untimely pinches and it is a recipe for disaster.

Edit: And the highest paid - key point

You can't teach Carle how to make a pass, Coburn how to play physically and Meszaros when not to pitch (well I guess you could teach the last one, but I doubt he changes that up).

In some ways, I wish more coaches like Torts actually have the balls to sit good players to get their **** together. Kind of wish Lavy would do that with like Carle or Briere or something.

Well Mesz seems to be teaching Bourdon when not to pinch

The team needs a d-man who can clear the crease. There is a matter of defensive breakdowns that include the forward, so not always is it the singular issue of defensemen, however, there is a noticeable void.

I can't even count how many times today I yelled at the tv when Mez made a dumb pinch that led to an offensive chance the other way

I was maybe thinking of making a thread about it, but what do you guys think, in all honesty, as we currently stand, should do about our defense as a whole in the off-season?

If the injury is related to the head, it generally isn't a prudent decision to put someone on an aircraft. The cabin pressure alone can be debilitating. That in itself is assuring. If and when more info is issued, we'll place it in the injury report.

The defense is soft in front of their own net.

Not only that, it seemed, especially for the 3rd Cally goal, they are huge puck chasers, as in really lose position in doing so.

If only we had some 6 foot 6 defensman who was nasty, had attitude and set the defensive tone for the team. You know a guy to anchor your whole defense around.

CBC just referenced your namesake on the Pens/Jets game. Talking how Fleury and Pavs played for Cape Breton Screaming Eagles, and they said remember the Miami Screaming Eagles

Even though he's a good guy and everybody likes him, I kinda wish somebody would smack Callahan right across his ****in face.

When some question how much he brings to a team it boggles my mind.

Kimmo Timonen went off on lack of compete today in LR. Also cited system and execution of it. He never sugar-coats things.

You guys have pretty much outlined the problems with out defensemen already, but the issue is team defense- it's not just the six blueliners. I mean come on, Giroux and Briere down the middle are surrounded by a mix of rookies and vets who aren't exactly lockdown guys.

As much as I like all our young players, it wouldn't bother me to see one or two of them go for a couple forwards who play well in their own end. On one hand all those young guys should keep getting better defensively as they get experience, but aside from Talbot where are the veteran forwards who you feel good about in their own end?
