It's not like you to be so narrow minded. There is lots of hockey outside of the NHL. I follow college hockey and travel down to Tucson to see their team on occasion.
If you doubt my love for hockey because I wouldn't be following the NHL, you would be wrong, my friend.
That's great and all, but to swear off the NHL as if they did something to personally harm you is silly. The NHL went out of their way to prevent a back door hostile takeover of a franchise that was, in the eyes of the courts, totally bankrupt. I just find it funny that the same people who continually ride their high-horse of fandom around (season tickets! look at meeee!) seem to be the ones crapping out on the NHL the most over all of this.
If they do move, it's going to suck. It will hurt. There will be trolls. There will be a lot of gloating and taunting. Probably people who could care less that Phoenix ever had a team. But it seems silly to give in to all of that and swear off the league. What were you really a fan of? The idea of the NHL in Phoenix or NHL caliber hockey in general? I'd like to think that most fans fall in the latter category and appreciate the game for what it is. And I identify with the need to root for the home team; I started out young as a Red Wing fan but switched when my family moved to Phoenix. I only follow the D'Backs and the Cardinals outside of hockey. In all likelihood, this will be my first long distance fanship. But for me (and for all of you, really), there was hockey before the Coyotes and there will be hockey afterwards.
No one is doubting your love of hockey. But giving up so easily on the NHL seems odd to me.
I just find Phoenix to be too big of a market to not have a hockey team here. The city is massive, and so many canadian people here. I drove back from the game today, and passed a couple people past anthem on I-17 N that had coyotes logos on the back of their car windows. People from the north are driving down to the game. There was a game earlier this year when I was still living in Flag where a car turned off at the Cottonwood exit with coyotes sticker on their car. I'm only assuming they went to the game.
It's unfortuante if they move, but I'm still going to want to watch hockey. I just hope that there is still an NHL team here, because I love going to see it live.
Well, the latest Daly update is "there's nothing new to report" and "the Quebec arena announcement has nothing to do with the status of the Coyotes."
Which means that:
a) the negotiations really are ongoing with the mythical three buyers and Quebec is just trying to get lined up for a future team IF one becomes available
b) the NHL wants the CoG, GJ, et al to see that it's really time to ***** or get off the pot nudge...nudge
c) Daly wants to be able to say down the road with plausible deniability "hey, we had NOTHING to do with Quebec, they chose to build an arena but there were no ongoing negotiations at the time, until we were forced to start negotiations."
No, I'm from california originally, took french 4 years in hs, spent a summer with a French host family, continued it in college as a minor, majored in Russian. Married a polish guy, so the Russian was useful in that it's very close to polish.
So the French teacher in me says I'd rather see them in QC if they have to leave, but I don't know how much longer I'd continue to watch after a move. I can't see me wearing a nordiques jersey, but that's mostly because I really, really don't like the logo or the color. I didn't like the kachina coyotes logo or colors either, so maybe if they do something with nordiques 2.0, that could change.
Yes, Latin would help with russian. Most English speakers don't have a good grasp of grammar until they've studied another language, Latin has the same concepts.
Short quick sentences....try Rosetta stone or live mocha.
I have no idea if the Coyotes might move to Quebec, but if they do then the guys who need to learn French are Tippett and Maloney. Quebec fans and media don't mind players who don't speak French, but they will expect the GM and coach to know the language.

Rumor has it they are gone if the franchise moves to Quebec. Patrick Roy will have at least one (possibly both) of the roles.
Personally, if true I think that is a travesty. This franchise has overachieved the last three seasons. We are a lottery team that is a legitimate threat to the playoffs this year. We have no business even being in the discussions for a playoff spot with the level of talent we have up front.

On the surface it looks bad because of timing re: Quebec annoucing to build a new building and the issues in Glendale, but Daly is correct in that one has nothing to do with the other. Forgetting the NHL, Quebec City needs a new arena ( the current one is like 60 years old ) just like Winnipeg needed a new arena when they built the MTS Centre ( to replace again a 50 year old building ). Quebec City isn't specifically targeting the Coyotes, they are just getting ready in case a team ( any team ) does one day become available.

is that an e4 rumor?
shades of Gretzky...I know Roy has owned and managed an LQMJHL team
If the Coyotes make the post season and are eliminated late in the first round, or some time in the second, Quebec won't have a whole lot of time to get hockey operations squared away. I would guess theyd FIRST offer most Yotes staff their old jobs in QC and then poach from the QMJHL all positions not accepted by former Coyotes.
It was easy in Winnipeg. The just promoted all of the Moose staff. Took an AHL operation and turned it NHL over night. I'm sure there are a handful of Coyotes staff that would go. I'm sure there are some old Quebec Citadels still around up there they could hire. They could also likely have the pick of the litter of Q employees.
oddly enough, one of my students has told me that her brother (who is the laundry person for the team) has actually been considering whether or not to go with the team when/if they move.
I thought that was a bit odd, it's not like it's a job with lots of training or expertise. To move to a different country with a different language would seem quite a bit of effort. And I'm not sure how that would work with work visas, etc. I have no experience with Canadian law on that aspect, but I know many countries won't allow you to come in and work if there isn't a shortage of native-born personnel who could fill the position.
I was thinking more about hockey operations, executive staff, directors, etc. People with their own office and a name plate on the door. Three figures folks.

I agree with this. Quebec is not in a position to "target" any team. This is all in the hands of the NHL. Even if there is a link between the recent announcement in QC and the Coyotes situation, that is all part of the NHL's machinations. It has become abundantly clear in the past several weeks that the City of Glendale are basically bystanders right now waiting for the NHL to decide the fate of the Coyotes.
Why would Quebec want to get rid of Maloney and Tippett just because they don't speak french? Just imagine what these 2 together could do with an actual owner that threw money at the team and said "use this at your discretion".

I don't think it is based on hockey logic, but the realities of their market. I would be very surprised if QC managed to get an NHL team and did not make sure that both the GM and the coach could speak French.

Speaking French is even more mandatory in QC than it is in Montreal.
Hope you guys don't have to go through the pain of losing your team like us in Atlanta did. Wish you guys all the best!
Thanks for the well wishes and I'm certainly hoping we don't. btw...that logo is sweet, hell I like that way better than the exploading jet (thanks rt) logo!

Ugh...another reason for me to hate the idea of them going to ****ing Quebec, if it has to happen please let it be Seattle or KC.

"Realities of their market?" It sounds like you're suggesting they would rather have a second-rate coach who speaks French than a first-rate coach who only speaks English. Is the sentiment there that strong, that a majority of fans would be willing to fire a highly successful coach and a smart, budget-savvy GM purely over the language issue?

Yes, yes, and yes. The language issue would trump a lot of other considerations, and most fans in Quebec are quite certain that there are French-speaking GMs and coaches who are just as good as the best in the NHL. There are many things about which I am uncertain, but I am quite confident that an NHL franchise in Quebec City would have a French-speaking GM and coach.

Have you been ignoring the current Montreal Canadiens fiasco?
Personally, I hope Montreal beats any potential new Quebec ownership to the punch and hires Roy. Rumors are however that Roy is being courted by the Quebec ownership group. Like it or not he's heavily ingrained in that community and revered in that province. Personally, I think he's a huge ***** myself.
I will say this I haven't warmed up to the new Jets franchise (even though I grew up a Jets fan) largely in part on that organizations decision to fire Rick Dudley (who is an incredible GM in his own right).
I agree, if they moved to QC then Maloney and Tippet are goners. I suspect both of them would be picked up in a hurry if they became available on the open market however.
Think of the language issue almost the same as a French speaking coach or GM with little English came to LA or NY. You just wouldn't see it happening because the media access to those people is important and the market is going to require the local language. I'm sure there are examples of exceptions to those rules, but it's less than common.
From my understanding, QC seems to be especially fond of their culture/heritage. I don't know if it was a joke or not, I think not, but I recall news articles in the past talking about Quebec trying to secede from Canada. I know Montreal has typically always had French speaking coaches/GM's and I think one time someone took over as interim head coach or something and was required to take lesson in French.
I couldn't care less what language a coach spoke as long as the players on the ice would be able to understand what he wanted. Is the speaking french mainly for the media and the fan base there that doesn't speak english or something?
