In the last few years, many fans complained about the fact we didnt get Perron in 2007.
Going back to the past did Montreal made the right choice to take Pacioretty over Perron? (Perron is one year older)
Unfair based on the fact that Perron was injured for so long. Perron is more of a natural scorer. Pacioretty brings the size though which makes it pretty appropriate for our team. But we would not have missed if we would have went with Perron injury free if that exists. But Pacioretty had indeed become one of my favorite player, big power forward coming from the Michigan program, you can't miss.

I think it's very fair especially given that all the whiners in 2007 had never seen Pacioretty play but still complained that we took him over Perron. Perron is soft as butter and has been in coaches doghouses at all levels. I doubt he'd have over 40 points on this Habs team at this point in the season. Patches is also a much better skater and has more dimensions to his game along with better attitude and work ethic. Patches was the better pick. I'd bet this would be unanimous among all 30 NHL GMs.
I think it's fair to consider health.. Pacioretty is a beast, he seems to recover quickly from injury and also seems to play through them (i.e the wrist injury earlier this year). I would consider that as something you would value in a player over another. I take Pacioretty.

***Cough****Cough**** Perron was injured? I guess ***cough***cough*** Patches was on vacation and not injured last year. Patches & Perron missed about the same number of games last year. And the games Perron missed this year are balanced by the bum ride Patches got in Montreal the first couple of years. So the missed games are irrelevant. Also, wasn't that a knock against Perron during the draft. A little on the small/soft side. So I find it ironic that you would use his injuries to call foul in this comparison.
Looking back, Timmins made the best choice. We needed a power forward who could score. Patches met all those requirements. A dipsy doodle sorta player like Perron would have been great if we were built like Boston or Philly but we weren't at the time so again we come back to the fact that Timmins made a fantastic pick. He filled a need and that player worked out in spades.
The only thing that Perron has over Patches is that he is a francophone and from the Q. And although Montreal needs a few of those players, I would would still make that pick 1000 times out of a 1000.
I didn't like Perron at all in the draft, and I didn't really know anything about Pacioretty at all. Although there were some voices around here in favour of both of them IIRC. (I don't remember having any particular other favourites to choose instead, for a change... I liked MacLean and Legein and Marshall though I don't recall promoting any of them as the Habs pick, they all are basically 2nd round busts now! I took Subban #18 in my own FHL draft!).
I'd take Pacioretty over Perron now. I was probably wrong about Perron, I sort of focused on the selfish-dangler-perception I had of Perron at the time, and didn't really see that he'd develop the "crust" needed to translate his abundant skills into NHL impact. But he seems to have, and I was wrong. Maybe I still distrust him a little bit from that draft evaluation, however, and maybe that taints my vote for Pacioretty.
At the time Perron was said to have attitude problems. Obviously overblown as he looks like a pro in the NHL so even on similar talent evaluations at the draft it was right pick. Pacioretty has become more of what we need so now that pick selection is still right.
Back then and in the first few years of their careers I thought Perron would have been the better choice, but Pacioretty's play of late has made me change my mind. Considering we need size, I think Pacioretty is a better player for us. We'll see how the rest of their careers play out, they're still young. That being said, they're both solid players, and drafting Perron would not have been a mistake at all. He would probably be a little further along had he not missed a year because of his concussion. Pacioretty suffered an important injury too, but he didn't miss as much time as Perron and his play this year shows it hasn't had an effect on him.
