Your PK

Hey guys, I looked at the stats and noticed that you guys are 25th in the league on the PK. I was just wondering how is that possible?! You have the lowest GAA in the league, a great D, great 2 way forwards, and very good goalies. The Rangers are 2nd in the league in GAA, but we're 5th in PK. I guess it's a testament to your even strength defense. I still think that's one of the most amazing stats I've seen all year.

It is a mystery.

One I hadn't truly pondered until now

Well they started out 30th because when they started the season 6-7-0 they were actually dominant 5x5 but just horrendous on each special teams unit. Then when Hitch took over they played for a long time at a rate that would have been atop the West for PK percentage. Then they had a stretch leading up to the NJ game where they allowed 6 PP goals in 19 chances. They'd clawed back to about 18th or so before that letdown. Detroit and Pittsburgh will do that to you sometimes.

They have been special tonight though. It's been a thing of beauty.

I don't think many have thought about it because it hasn't mattered a ton.

My theory is the Blues get so many back to back penalties that we get wore down.

Thanks. I'm surprised that 13 games is hard to overcome.

Our special teams haven't been very good all season, but our 5 on 5 has been dominant. Our goal differential on 5 on 5 is top 3, but our goals for during 5 on 5 is around 20, so we just never allow goals during 5 on 5.

Yeah it got off to a slow start and seemed like it took a bit for guys like Scott Nichol to form chemistry, with him being new, but lately it's been really solid IMO.

It was at 73.8% (over 42 opportunities) before Hitchcock took over. That represents 23% of the Blues total opportunities this year.

Before tonight, the Blues had allowed a PP goal in 4 games straight and in 9 of the last 12 games. I think if the Blues were losing more or allowing more goals, we'd be seeing the PK be criticized a lot more than it has been. It's gone through a rough stretch lately but hopefully tonight's game is a sign that it's getting back on track.

a combo of the pre hitch era, less time spent short handed, a more "transition" based d, being a dominant 5 on 5 team and generally just having poor special teams all season. i would imagine the pk should get to around 20th by the end of the season.
