No big surprise for those listening to the telecasts...

I always found Harry amusing in a corny way.

I guess I am one of the few that will miss him.

Were you just listening to the Islanders game feed too? hah

The pxp announcers for the islanders were talking about Neale

Now I'm curious what could possibly have made them talk about Neale in the first place

To be honest i was only half paying attention but they were talking about Nabokov and his perfect positioning and then somehow that evolved into a conversation about Neale, and lastly how hes getting older and he will prob retire soon.

Clearly i didnt pay much attention until i heard his name

Wouldn't that mean that Jeanneret is also retiring after this season?
I remember reading that they both continued to extend their contracts as long as the other did.

I'll wait for a confirmed source. No way this news comes out on another team's game broadcast.

Sounds to me like the OP misheard what was actually said.

I'll add a no way. No way Rick ties his career to Harry Neale's in that way.

I'm not so sure. Not that Rick thinks his legacy is tied to Harry's, but at this stage of the game, already considering retirement himself, his second partner retiring might be a bit persuasive. It might just have a psychological kind of effect. As more of your peers leave and everyone around you keeps getting younger, you start to feel out of place.

It's the Islanders - Wang probably talked to Neale about becoming the team's next coach

That hardly sounds like a report as much as it sounds like the same common sense expectation many of us have.

When Lorentz left, it wasn't so much out of age as it was to just enjoy his fishing past-time and end the travelling. Neale was always older than RJ from the first day so if he retires before RJ, I don't see how such news would discourage RJ from continuing on. And, considering how thrilled RJ was with the new ownership allowing him to dictate the terms of his reduced travel schedule combined with his words at his Sabre HoF induction in November, I can see RJ sticking as long as health allows him to and he can do primarily home games.

Oh, and Rabi, thanks for getting my hopes up for nothing! I was actually excited when I read the thread title because I've gotten tired of Neale's decrepit act of forgetting the score, misreferencing players and Vaudevillian one-liners.

I know RJ has said he will go as long as Neale and vice versa.

No, I'll miss Harry. It still amazes me how many times I'll watch some old clip of a great game from around the league, and BAM, there's Harry doing color. The guy has been around.

And dear God, I hope Danny Gare isn't being considered as a replacement.

No doubt, his commentaries on many of the HNIC telecasts from the 90s were memorable and solid. However, he's a shadow of that person now - he clearly suffers from memory lapses, short attention spans and repetitive routines.

Agreed on Gare. I'm praying for Brian Duff giving up his NHLN duties and becoming RJ's full-time color commentator. It would give Sabre fans the best of both worlds - the raw emotion and passion of RJ with the knowledgable, attentive and insightful Duff breaking down plays or pointing out some relevant observation that may not have been obvious.

For all of the fraternal bonds that RJ and Neale may share being beer-drinking buddies and of the same generation, I would bet that RJ would actually be rejuvenated and somewhat inspired to work alongside a true (and younger) professional like Duff.

Duff isn't really a color option, is he? He's more of a studio host than anything.

Sure, he's a color option. Unless you feel the triumvirate of Neale, Gare, Sylvester, has set the bar too high.

No, I'd just rather have Duff do what we know he is good at, which is host and toss it back and forth between speakers.

I'd like to believe that Neale is retiring, it's time; he and Bob Cole were a great tandem on HNIC.

As for Duff, I'd like him anywhere we could put him full-time. He's done primarily hosting, so I'd have no problem with him taking over that role from Sylvester. Adam Benigni (of Channel 2) wouldn't be a bad studio addition either. I'm not a fan of Sylvester at all.

We now know that he's good as an analyst too.

He did color for us one game? I've been catching the away broadcasts for the past few weeks as they're in HD on the package and our feed isn't. I must've missed the game Duff did as a color man, then. Any good?

IIRC I don't think he's done actual "color" color commentary, as in speak as much as Neale, Ray, or Gare. Just will pop in a fact during play, maybe once a period.
