For tonight, Avs fans should hope for regulation wins for Rangers, Jets and Stars. If you feel Avs can't catch Kings, hope for a regulation win for them too. If you feel Avs can catch Kings, then hope for a regulation win for Coyotes.

Updated. I think I'll create a program to count those "best possible and worst possible in a week from now"-standings. Shouldn't be hard, the way to count those is:
Best possible:
-Avalanche wins all games in regulation
-Each team loses in regulation each non-4-point game
-Each lower position team wins in regulation each 4-point game
Worst possible:
-Avalanche loses all games in regulation
-Each team wins each non-4-point game
-Each higher position team wins after regulation each 4-point game
If the game can't be solved otherwise, it's defaulted into, say, home win.
Just go to a flippin' win/lose system. No 2 point, 3 point, etc games. At the end of the season, if you won more than others, you get in the playoffs. OT and SO wins can figure into tie-breakers for playoff spots.

That will never happen. At the very least, they would need a W-L-T system again. In that case, shootouts would be eliminated and I just don't see that happening.

I'd still go for the point% system. Basically nothing would need to change - the only thing that instead of current ranking by "points for" would be "point percentage" i.e. points for / (points for + points against). That way you can still award the same amount of points as now and you still get rid of the current "each game is not worth the same"-system. Even better, there would be no need to count the games on hand.
The Western standings would today look like:
St Louis 61,11
Vancouver 59,54
San Jose 55,65
Detroit 60,94
Nashville 57,14
Chicago 51,54
Dallas 50,81
Phoenix 50,39
Calgary 48,84
Los Angeles 48,51
Minnesota 45,74
Colorado 45,45
Anaheim 45,24
Edmonton 39,84
Columbus 32,00

What would it look like without any kind of loser points?
Holy crap...dude, is that programmed with a Commodore 64?
Actually, it probably is programmed with something even older and it uses 7-bit ASCII. Even if you see that from Internet, that's a feature of "used-to-be-modern" TVs. Believe me, even if that might look like a joke for you, a huge part of Finns still today uses it daily to check for news quickly.
Dallas plays against Phoenix, so shouldn't we hope for Dallas or Phoneix and then also Calgary or LA.
Or did you by mistake put Phoenix instead of Calgary/LA?
Oh yeah, I have an error there. So you should hope for Dallas and Calgary to win, so that PHO/LAK/CGY would have there 65 points and Stars would have 63.
