Dallas has pretty much won this one:

That leaves us two points out, tied with Calgary and LAK with one more game played.

If only a team like Chicago or Phoenix would have a random 10 game losing streak, this would be a lot easier

Games of Interest today:

Phoenix @ Edmonton (2PM MST) would be nice if Phoenix stopped winning
Chicago @ Los Angeles (6PM MST) will be on NHLN, we need LAK to LOSE
Philadelphia @ Calgary (8PM MST) will be on CBC, we need CAL to LOSE

LA up 4-0 on Chicago. Can't these teams just lose to the teams they're supposed to?

I would be more disapointed if they shoot themselves in the foot over the remainding games. If they play like I know they can and dont make it, I'd be upset but at least they gave it their all. If the decide to not play with heart however and go on losing streak I'm gonna be pissed.

Really the Avs only need the Flames, Kings and Stars to loose a game and the Avs win one they'll all be pretty much equal.

But dear god, ducks are creaping up now? I knew they were getting close but not THAT close. The West is a tough cookie this season.

I can't help but thinking if Avs win half of their division games... we won't be sitting tight in bubble right now

Or if a few more games were lost in OT. LA and Calgary have 12 and 11, respectively, the Avs have 4.

If we went 2-2 with Flames, they'd be out of it and we'd be solidly in a playoff spot. Flames aren't very good. They just bring out the worst in Avs.

Anything could happen. Chicago and San Jose ain't playing that well right now and If Avalanche keeps playing 6-2-2 for the rest of the season they have got a good chance to make it IMO.

Not sure if it was mentioned here, but the Avs likely wouldn't have the tie breaker if they are tied for 8th at the end of the season. The NHL changed their format to not include SO wins in the number of wins for the first tie breaker. They will likely have less Reg/OT wins than whichever team they're tied with.

The Avs are 2nd in the league with 7 SO wins. Minny has 6. Dallas and LA have 4. Calgary and Anaheim have 3.

I really hate the OTLs. That's the only reason why the Kings and Flames are even close right now. Should be between us and Dallas.

So who are we actually cheering for in the

San Jose/Minnesota
Chicago/Anaheim

games?

I would say forget Chicago at this point, though they are still playing pretty awful so technically they could be come reachable. Still, I think I want them to win.

San Jose is a different story. They're only 3 points up on us, though with 3 games in hand. Are we still cheering for them to win?

We won't catch SJS unless they enter full meltdown mode.

LA wins and CAL gets a point in OT.
Seriously, the last week or so every result of our opponents was against us. ( 3 point games between our opponents and wins against superior opponents and so on).
Seems like someone up there does not want us to make it.
But we will hopefully not go down without a fight
Maybe there would be one positive if we don't make it though ( I absolutely want to make it!)

If we make it, wouldnt that mean Sacco back for another year or two?
Just throwing that thought out there....

Updated.

By "there's nothing you can do to lose / catch them"-math (i.e. games in hand) makes these two things:

1) Sharks have two games in hand so they are 2*2 + 71-68 = 7 points ahead of Kings in standings => Not in the playoff battle (that doesn't mean they couldn't be there tomorrow)

2) Ducks have on game in hand so they are 1*2 + 62-68 = -4 points ahead of Stars (i.e. four points behind) => In the playoff battle (that doesn't mean they would be there tomorrow)

Now what are the actual odds that teams misses or makes the playoffs or how many jeffcarters they acquired or how many ryanobyrnes are injured are just for the simplicity excluded from here.

Tough to say. SJ has 3 games in had on Chicago so Chicago could end up being #7 seed. Looking forward instead of looking backwards is the way to go.

I wouldn't be disappointed with either outcome as long as it isn't a 3 point game.

A lot of these comes down to "do you believe in streaks?". Avs can easily catch up Coyotes, Blackhawks, Sharks and Kings, it just requires from each of those four about a five game losing streak, while Avs similarly have a five game winning streak.

That's not impossible.
