Really need to watch season 1 again. Thinking about buying the blu ray version before Season 2 comes out.
OT, does anyone who's seen it think it's worth buying Battlestar Galactica the complete series? I've watched parts of it but really want to watch the whole thing so I'm thinking of getting a set that includes all of it. The bits I watched were excellent and I've heard only good things about the show (best scifi series ever? and so on).
I spent over 2 hours watching just extras on the blu ray for Game of Thrones last night. They did an amazing job going through the histories and the lands. The thing they did so well was they gave you more than one perspective of some of the major battles in history - which is very true to Martin who is less about good vs evil and more about the point of view. It was really well done. I managed to find two hidden dragon eggs so far, which are just cast member try outs but still fun. My wife and I just have the final 2 episodes to rewatch to gear up for season 2.
As for Battlestar, personally I thought season 1 was amazing and then it got off the rails a bit. Seasons 2 and 3 weren't bad but they were just ok. Season 4 did a good job of pulling it back together and I for one liked the ending but it never quite reached the levels of season 1 ever again, in my opinion. So at the least season 1 is worth a grab absolutely and maybe the whole series depending on how much you like it.
Why is it the right move? The horse was walking back to the stables, reared up and did a backflip and hit it's head on the ground and was judged best to be put down as a result.
Quote:
HBO provided a statement from California Horse Racing Board (CHRB) official veterinarian Dr Gary Beck, who said: “I had just examined the horse as part of our routine health and safety procedures prior to work that would be done later on the track.
“The horse was on her way back to the stall when she reared, flipped over backwards, and struck her head on the ground.
“Fortunately, attending veterinarian Dr Heidi Agnic was there to administer immediate aid to the injured horse and determined that humane euthanasia was appropriate.”
The board’s equine medical director, Dr Rick Arthur, commented: “As with all fatalities within CHRB racing enclosures, a necropsy will be conducted. Unfortunately, we see several of these injuries in the stable area every year. They are more common than people realize.”
I don't see how this has anything to do with the production. One crazy horse flips out and bangs it's head and now the show is in the can because of timing - they released information that two other horses died in season one just a short time prior so the appearance is 3 horses died in quick order.
If it were a case of they rode the horse too hard, ran it till it dropped of a heart attack, mistreated or abused it, or even shot it up with steroids to run longer I'd be right behind the move but this is crazy random **** and PETA goes it's regular psycho to get publicity and bam - shut down. The other two horses happened a year ago and I've got news for anyone who thinks this is rare for horses to be put down - it's not in the culture of horse racing. The show itself even drove this point home in the first episode.

The association, in a detailed account on its website, confirmed that first two fatal accidents occurred several months apart – one in the filming of the pilot and one during the filming of the seventh episode.
“The two racehorses stumbled and fell during short racing sequences,” the association said.
“The horses were checked immediately afterwards by the onsite veterinarians and in each case a severe fracture deemed the condition inoperable. The decision was that the most humane course of action was euthanasia.”
after the 2nd horse fell and was put down they put in extra precautions to ensure it wouldn't happen again;
Quote:
“These included, but were not limited to, daily training and care records, microchips in all of the horses, hiring an additional veterinarian to do the comprehensive soundness checks at the top of the day, and radiographs of the legs of all horses being considered for use on the show.
“We insisted that these protocols be in place before any filming could resume.
“HBO agreed to all our requests and worked collaboratively regarding these many additional safety guidelines and precautions, and resumed filming once all of the horses in the show stable were radiographed and those deemed at risk were pulled.”
Then they all passed a normal race-day medical check before being allowed to run (just like the real races).
I think they pulled the plug due to knee jerk outcries and PETA once again jabbing it's nose into everything. If it were anyone other than Michael Mann I'd say they would just stop running their own races to film in tight and on horse and just use real races for footage and move more of the plot to out of race emphasis (it's already about 5-10% of the footage anyways). But Mann loves his realism and probably wouldn't do that, but it may be a way to continue the successful show if HBO gets past this negative press.

It's a good show, I don't think you'd regret it if you got the DVDs.
After watching 2 episodes I had already decided that I was keeping HBO beyond my free 3 month trial and had it set to DVR the new season on April 1st
The best part is that it doesn't start to get really good until episodes 6-10.
It is tough to follow the character names on the show, though. Reading the books makes it so much easier to follow. I would say that is my only complaint.

It's not even easy with the books sometimes he throws so many at you. The major characters are easy enough but the minor ones - half of which become major characters later - the first time I read it I went back to the chart of all the houses like every other page.

Excellent news! We plan on finishing the last 4 episodes tonight!!! Very much so looking forward to it!

Yeah, hopefully I'll find the blu ray set for a decent price. Probably from Amazon.

Pretty much what I've read and heard about it, that season one was amazing and the others had a hard time living up to it but still a great show nevertheless. Seen those who've liked every bit of it aswell though, lots of different opinions as there always is. Will order it sometime soon so I can make my own judgement. Looking forward to it, love sci fi.

I didn't see that the third one died from a freak accident, I had assumed that they were all racing-scene related.
Just finished season 1 and good gravy if next season is better and/or more shocking then the first I'm gonna love love love it.
If they split the 3rd book into season 3 and 4, those will be the best seasons.
I always suggest reading the books to people. I'm not a reader by any means and I went through the books in no time. It isn't like they are short books either.

It took watching the show to get my wife and friends to read them and they have loved them. Agreed seasons 3 and 4 are the most insane but as ripshot points out season 1 had quite the WTF ending as well...lol.
And for those who aren't big readers, I read the books some time back but I have got the audible books for my commute (hour each way) and it is read brilliantly by Roy Dotrice. I have listened to them like 3 times it so well done. I didn't even get book 5 in book format I just went right to the audible.

I would love to get the audio books for my drives from vt to nj, but they are so expensive.
The ending of the 1st book is definitely a wtf moment, but so much happens in the 3rd book. I think the 6th one is going to be similar to the 3rd one, where a lot is going to happen because it has been set up by the 4th and 5th books.

Have you tried audible.com? It's $15 a month but you get one free credit a month. Actually when I first joined I did the $20 a month but you get two free credits to start and then you can stop at any time and turn it back on at any time. So I built up enough credits to get all 4, turned it off for awhile. Then when book 5 came out I turned it on for one month at $15, got dance with dragons, and turned it off again. It's quite reasonable. Agreed though - otherwise audible books can be pricey. I never would have tried it if it wasn't for audible.
Edit: Actually here is the offer I first used to try it out a couple of years back. Two free books to start so you can get at least book 1 (some of the books I think are 2 credits instead of 1 due to size) and see if you like it.
