Garrioch: Sabres want to move Regehr?

According to the Ottawa Sun, Sabres are trying to move Paul Gaustad and Robyn Regehr. I can understand Gaustad, becoming free agent and all, but Regehr? Why would they want to do that? It seems to me that they put up quite an effort to get Regehr in the first place, and besides Weber he's the only defensive defenceman in the bunch. Unless there's a request on Regehrs behalf to be moved out of Buffalo, I fail to see the logic in trading him.

Of course, it's just a rumor, but let's pretend there's some truth to it - what would be the reason?

Not a chance in hell that the Sabres go through all the effort to get Regehr to come here, then trade him in the first season. It's just not happening.

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking too. Of all the players, Regehr seems like one of the least possible to be on the market.

It's Bruce Garrioch. Salt to taste.

Bruce Garrioch.

This is a poor guess at best. This guy talks out his ass, a lot.

I actually wouldn't be too shocked if this was to happen. I kinda got the impression that he was hesitant to come here in the first place, and was waiting to see if any better options than Buffalo came along. He's not getting any younger, and this team isn't exactly on the cusp of a Stanley Cup win despite all the offseason hype.

That said, I hope there's nothing to this one.

Pretty much.
Except Regehr said repeatedly at the time that it wasn't about Buffalo, it was about if he wanted to move his family, and leave western Canada.

The whole 'he's waiting for better offers' was a media driven angle that wasn't based in fact.

Oh, okay, never heard that side of the issue. This past offseason was kind of a blur.

It could also be that Regehr quietly asked for a trade and doesn't want to hang out for another rebuilding project.

Unless Regehr asked to be traded, it's not happening and Garrioch's a moron.

I said in the trade thread I don't believe he's available, but it also just dawned on me that Calgary sits just two points out in the West. Would they even want and/or need him back? Does he still have a home in the area? And so on...

The only way this is true is if the Sabres are targeting someone and they want Regehr to make it happen. There's no way the Sabres are shopping Regehr or want to move him otherwise.

Or Regehr is begging to be moved.

Much better news.

But really, if true, this can only mean that he's asked for a trade. There's no way they go to all that trouble to acquire him only to send him packing the next year.

Also possible, it just seems unlikely given the kind of guy Regehr is.

True, but never underestimate a player's wife/family.

Given that Robyn and his wife needed to be convinced to leave Calgary, I doubt that it's that.

Robyn's wife is from Calgary IIRC. It is quite possible that they aren't happy in Western NY and want to go some place else. It's been a pretty miserable season on ice.

Regehr doesnt seem happy in Buffalo IMO. Just doesn't seem to be embracing Hockey Heaven.

Trade him. Trade Gaustad, if they sign a 4th liner to $2.5+ a year Pegula has lost his mind. Plus, how can Mr Green environment guy play for an Oil tycoon?
