Contract negotiations between Erik Karlsson - represented by Don Meehan and the Newport Group - and the Ottawa Senators front office - led by GM Bryan Murray, et al. - cuold take an intriguing turn, one that would bode well for the development of the Ottawa Senators franchise in the long-term.

What I like most of all about that is how Karlsson wants to stay in Ottawa. A player like Erik will not only make this team great in years to come, but he'll also draw other highly talented players to him, because they will want to play with other great players.

Extend him ASAP so that he doesn't need to think of anything but being incredible for the rest of the season.

It's probably the safest bet, making sure they get a good read on EK before signing him to a possible lifetime contract. It could also come back to bite us in the ass if he gets significantly better, financially of course, as I think we can all agree that we want him to be the best.

It's a good term. I hope we do the same with Cowen in two years.

A GOOD READ on him!??!!??! The Guy is 21, leads all Defensemen in scoring and is a 2X all star before he is our of his entry level contract!!! His body positioning is amazing for his Dwork as well! What more do they need to see and how much better could he possibly get! I say dont screw around and just sign him longterm. The only concern is injuries but he seems to be ok in that realm as well. What is the drawback MURRAY!!! GET IT DONE!

You said it yourself, injuries are a concern. How much better does he get defensively? Does he emerge as a leader in the room? What direction is the team heading in at that time? Putting off the big decision for 3 years is not a bad thing at all.

I've read he is already considered one...and judging by his personality and the way some of his most prominent teammates speak about him it sounds legit.

He's a virtual lock to get an "A" in 2013-2014.

Give him whatever the **** he wants for however long the **** he wants.

He is the most exciting player on this team and can single-handedly change the outcome of games.

One of my fav EK moments was against Calgary this year. Through sheer force of will tied the game up allowing for Alfie magic in OT.

EK65=Beast.

Would be surprised if Foligno got one over Karlsson.

Although we might have 2 letters to hand out by the end of Phillips' contract.

He's the future of the franchise, at least in the near future. A turnover machine that he might be, he's the most entertaining player on the Sens and it's good to see his enthusiasm to keep playing in Ottawa

He isn't really a turnover machine. Yes, I see the stats....has anyone ever called John Carlson a turnover machine?

It really is just a testament to how much he has the puck...it's not surprising a puck carrying and puck mover like Karlsson is high in giveaways...it's very common actually. What IS unique though is that he's actually able to take the puck away about just as much. That is rare....and it means he has the puck even more than most top puck movers.

Yep. This is definitely the best part. Sounds like Alfie's been rubbing off on Erik.

We know Erik is fond of Alfie, and we know Alfie wants to stay in Ottawa, and we know Erik has seen the kind of love Alfie gets around here for being loyal to his team... I would say this is a very positive sign.

It's huge.

You can never be certain about a player lasting forever with the same franchise....but your chances increase when you have a bond like this.

Not really surprising. A lot of guys get decent change on RFA deals that take them through til UFA before they really cash in with a huge contract.
