Even though I disagree with much of his rant, I can't really blame Newman for being pissed off. The poor ******* gets wrecked through no fault of his own at restrictor plate races all the time. It doesn't help that the entire SHR organization has basically been crap this year either. NASCAR was just a convenient target for his anger.

Newman has probably had more scary looking wrecks at plate races than any of the other current drivers. I think his rant was very understandable even if politically incorrect. He gets credit in my book for speaking his mind regardless of the outcome.

Basically said NASCAR had their heads up their ass continuing to race during rain showers and darkness.

Newman not fined

Gibbs' penalties were reduced by the appeals panel

Quote:
The National Stock Car Racing Appeals Panel today heard and considered the appeal of the#20 Joe Gibbs Racing NASCAR Sprint Cup Series team. The penalties concern Sections 12-1: Actions detrimental to stock car racing; 12-4J: Any determination by NASCAR Officials that race equipment used in the event does not conform to the NASCAR rules detailed in Section 20 of the NASCAR rule book, or has not been approved by NASCAR prior to the event; and 20-5.5.3E: Only solid magnetic steel connecting rods with a minimum weight of 525.0 grams will be permitted. Connecting rod failed to meet minimum connecting rod weight. The penalties stemmed from a post-race engine inspection April 23 at the NASCAR Research and Development Center. The Appellants appealed all penalties. The Appellants also requested and were granted a deferral of the suspensions until such time as the hearing could be convened. Upon hearing the testimony, it was a unanimous decision by the National Stock Car Racing Appeals Panel to amend the original penalties assessed by NASCAR. The amendments are as follows:
Crew chief Jason Ratcliff: The $200,000 fine remains intact; NASCAR suspension now covers one championship points event. In addition, he will be placed on NASCAR probation until the completion of the next three championship points events following his reinstatement;
Car owner Joe Gibbs: Loss of championship owner points has been reduced to 12. All other components of his penalty were rescinded;
Driver Matt Kenseth; Loss of championship driver points has been reduced to 12. All other components of his penalty were rescinded;
Manufacturer: The loss of NASCAR Sprint Cup Series manufacturer championship points has been increased to seven.

I was at Dega but left during the rain delay. Once the lightning started the track announcers advised everyone to clear the grandstands and take cover. We (buddy & I) took that as our cue to split, and then we got some steady rain for about 15 minutes, so we figured the race would be called before long anyway. By the time we got out and to our car though the rain had stopped. Oh well.

I'm glad I got to see Dega once but wouldn't go again. I don't care for plate racing very much. Glad to see one of the lower-profile teams win it though.

Finally, common sense gets injected into the equation. Take that Robin Pemberton.

It's obvious you have a personal hatred of the Gibbs organization. Any penalty needs to fit the crime. It didn't before, it does now. 3 grams didn't affect the outcome of the race and it's obvious there was no intent to cheat.

No hatred, just hate cheaters.

It obviously would effect the car, otherwise why do it?

It was 3 grams. Nobody is stupid enough to attempt cheating for the benefit of 3 grams. That's why it was a mistake that required a penalty but not a death penalty.

Tip if you ever go to Darlington: sit in turn 4, not along the front straightaway. I attended both the Nationwide & Cup races and had a much better view of the former from the turn, than the latter from the straightaway.

And shorten the friggin race! 500 miles is ridiculous for that track. You could tell everyone was just playing it safe for long portions in the middle. The first debris caution was an obvious, "Damn this race is boring!" flag.

That's two more tracks off my "to see" list. Gotta hit Dover sometime..

Richmond and Dover are on my list for sure.

Las Vegas or Phoenix is more likely where i will attend my first Nascar race.

Here comes the onslaught of commercials.

I swear 300 miles of this race isn't even shown.

Should be interesting to see how NASCAR handles this. I'd be pissed if I were Kyle or Marcos. Brutal luck.

Everyone is getting 15 minutes with no position penalty. Right thing to do.
