...not sure how you came to that conclusion. 5 d-men. you dress 6 for every game and generally need another who is ready to go for injuries. seems unlikely boston resigns corvo after this season so it seems hamilton slots in nicely if he wins that final spot.

he doesnt blow anyone away with raw skills but the guy gives it his all every game and is generally very sound. he goes into the occasional stretch where his decision making isnt always great but he always seems to bounce back and rarely ever gets flat out beat. he makes the safe play most of the time and thats exactly what you want out of a 20+min a night guy. its not a bargain but its not really overpayment either id say its just about right. (he would have got more on the open market this offseason. probably slightly higher aav and more years.

A bit pricy, considering that significantly better defensive guys have gotten in that ballpark, but I guess he makes up for that with his physical game and booming shot.

The price for a group III D is $3M-$4M. Look at what Gorges,Liles,Beauchemin, etc received.

Boychuk could have gotten this deal two years ago as a group 6 if he had not re-signed in Boston for 2 years

Pretty good player, not a really good cap hit.

But if the Bruins have the money and are satisfied with his play, why not?

Meh, I think the cap hit's a little high. Overall a decent deal.

Maybe just a little too much, but the Bruins have the cap space and Boychuk plays a big role with the B's, glad he is staying on board for 3 more!

Considering how weak the UFA market is this off season, Boychuk would have easily made this much on the market, if not more.
It's never a good idea to use bad contracts as reference points. Babchuk should've gotten a little over half what he did.

Seems a little high, but not by much. It's also only for 3 years so not a big deal.

Great signing. Boychuk seems to have gotten better every year and makes a great partner for Chara. With a Top 3 of Chara, Seidenberg and Boychuk, and a bottom 4-6 of Ference and McQuaid, the Bruins have 5 of 6 spots rock solid. I'd presume they add a defenceman or two at the deadline and either deal Corvo in a salary dump, or just sit him out the rest of the way, barring injury.

If Boychuk left they'd be pretty short on D. Slight overpayment but it pays for security on the blueline until Hamilton is NHL ready

He's been the Bruins #3 defenseman since the 2010 playoffs. He's managed to find a steady spot in the Bruins top-4 where guys like Derek Morris, Thomas Kaberle, and Dennis Wideman simply couldn't. Might be overpaid by a few hundred thousand...... but why risk messing with something that clearly works?

i love it. He's still relatively young and a strong number of d-men don't have their best years until their late 20's and early 30's. last playoffs he anchored our second pairing, he's responsible defensively and i think has the talent to do more offensively, and hopefully he will soon.

i bet he would of gotten as much if not more on the open market, and we would of had no replacement for him in the system.

Eh, more than I would've liked but nothing I can't deal with. He's pretty good in his own zone but more importantly can throw series-changing hits. His hit on Kesler in game 2 was a huge factor as to why Boston won the Cup. As far as I'm concerned, without Boychuk, Boston wouldn't have won the Cup last year.

He is Boston's most crushing hitter (with the exception of Chara but he doesn't really throw too many crushing hits or he'd probably be suspended or penalized) and steps it up in the playoffs.

Guy's a pylon with no offensive game. Atrocious signing by CHiarelli.

Darn, was eyeing him as a replacement for Grossman in Dallas. I'd pay that much. Heck I think Grossman gets at least three per in FA.

meh... impartial on it.

He would have gotten easy 3.5-4 million as a UFA with perhaps additional term.

This is a fair deal for both sides.. but I would have prefered to trade Boychuck and get an upgrade myself.

He plays 17-20 minutes at evens a night, 2-3 minutes on the PK, has a decent right shot as an option for the PP. Hits and blocks shots, plays against decent levels of competition. is 8th in the league at +23, is good for 15-20 points a season IMO. has good size at 6'22" 225lbs, In the prime of his career.

Sounds like a top four defenceman to me. Since when is 3.36 cap hit a bad deal for that??? He would have easily fetched 4m per season as a UFA IMO.

Higher than he probably is worth, but comparable to what he, or a similar player, would get in free agency in the summer.

Dmen always cost more on the market than they should.

I would have gladly take him to the Islanders for that price. Hell, we pay Mark Eaton $2.5M.

UFA market just keeps getting thinner and thinner.
