Beauchemin is better then Boychuk. Much better. He could have easily gotten 4.5+ on the market.
edit: to be clear I am not arguing that Boychuk is overpaid. I think he took market value but dont use Beauchemin as an example of what he should be paid. Beauchemin took a huge discount to stay in Anaheim.
True, Beauchemin is better and was signed to an amazing contract
I mean its gonna be hard to beat that for any d-man
Above average defensively with average to below average offensive abilities (based on HARD+ and HARO+) and those numbers look even better with zone start adjustment and they got him sub-3.5 million when the average for his slot is roughly 3.85... well done Chiarelli.
I mean, **** you, but well done. Stop taking the players I want.
Gleason gets 4 @ $4m with NTC
Liles gets 4 @ $3.875m with partial NTC
Gorges gets 6 @ $3.9m with partial NTC
and Boychuk getting 3 @ $3.36m with no NTC, while playing 20 minutes a night for the defending Stanley Cup Champions, being 5th among NHL defenders with >30 GP in on-ice Corsi, and posting the 19th-best relative Corsi, is "overpaid by about a million"?
Just so we're clear.
With every signing, there always a bunch of ppl that just say that the player is overpaid thinking the cap is at 45-50M.
On a 64M cap, Boychuck only takes up about 5.25% of that cap. Very good deal!
A team too afraid to mess with chemistry and it's going to come back and bite them at some point I feel. Boychuk although not bad is a number 4 dman.
While I totally agree with the notion that winning teams sometimes overpay for their own guys, this contract isn't a case of that. Boychuk plays top 4 minutes, he's right handed shot, and he's only 28.
Campbell, Paille, and Kelly are the guys I more worry about falling into this category. Good soldiers, know their role, and seemingly popular teammates...but the price has to be right for them to come back. Boychuk got less than he would have gotten elsewhere, so this was an easy decision for Chiarelli. Those other guys, along with how to handle the Thomas-Rask situation, are going to be the tougher decisions leading into next season.
