Forget about Phaneuf...Nash IS the NHL's most overrated player. If he comes to Toronto he is suddenly crapped-on by everyone for being overpaid and overrated.

He has a nice, safe existence in Columbus where he can score 60 points a season and have the media call him a "Franchise Player". That ain't happening ever in Toronto.

Finally someone that agrees with me. I made a thread talking about how we should not be afraid to give up prospects (and we'd still have many left after a trade). He can always rebuild while the contracts he traded for expire which in nash and carter's are like 7 years for burke to rebuild the farm. Lots of them don't even have room to play on the leafs because we have so many useless big contracts so might as well trade them and those big contracts for two top forwards.

If the leafs don't get him, why would I be upset? It's a long shot at best anyways.

He had his chance but took the money to play for the NHL's worst team.

If it's a Phaneuf type garbage for Nash deal, I can see it being an acceptable risk given his contract, but generally, I think it's not the best idea to tie your mast to a guy like Nash at the expense of a ton of organizational depth.

I'd probably be "well that's how it usually goes" since we are talking about the Leafs .

Isn't the center we really need, but it's the kind of player we need.

Had a conversation about this w/ dynrehab over a beer about a week ago. The cost (on top of his 7.8 million) is likely to be astronomical. Is it worth it to deal all those assets, plus add 7.8 million in cap hit? I'm not sure now is the time to be making such big deals.

But someone will find a way to spin this as Burke failing to take advantage of the situation, and land the big fish.

So you like having komisarek, lombardi and armstrong cap hits instead? If we got nash and/or carter then its obvious that komisarek and lombardi will be gone and maybe armstrong. That's alot of cap space freed up. We are having no problems right now so if we just replaced those contracts with better players then its worth it. Plus we'd free up more space as schenn would most likely be gone and grabo might leave or macarthur might leave. So we might even open up 3-4m in space by making a trade.

I agree with this. The Phaneuf trade was a solid trade.
A kessel type deal doesn't benefit the team - I'd rather spend that on a number once center.

Getting both would surely make us a contender for years to come.

I'd pretty much sell the farm for this, as long as names Gardiner, Fratten, Biggs are not on the list.
frattin* and if carter and nash are coming back id give up anything but phaneuf lupul kessel which is our core..

That's the thing with some Leaf fans and management..
Every prospect is the next big thing..
Kaberle and Markov were too good to trade away for Rob Blake so we never did it

If Washington continues to sputter, I wonder how available their core pieces start to get in the summer time? Is it possible they could be headed for a retooling phase? Two guys I'd like to get would be Nicklas Backstrom, complete pipe dream, but maybe if things go sour it could become slightly less ludicrous. Another would be Marcus Johansson. He's pretty highly regarded but he's a quick, skilled center who can play wing. Maybe one of these guys becomes remotely possible with Kuznetsov coming up for the Caps... Just thinking out loud and putting some fresh names out there to think about.

Canucks, Kings, Bruins, Rangers. Easily in fact.

Vancouver - package around Hodgson and Schneider
Bruins - package around Krejci, Caron and Hamilton
Kings - JJ + Bernier +
Rangers - Dub/Callahan + Stepan/Kreider + MDZ/Erixon

Anything else?
