I'm in the middle, if Burke stole for him I'd be estatic, and if he paid a king's ransom for him I'd be furious. and everything in between.
I just don't think he will bring Toronto to that next level.. I don't. It's going to take a top line C (with size) and for our youth to continue to develop.
Nash's salary is a large negative in a salary cap system.. he's just not producing at a level that warrants that type of pay. If he was.. completely different story. But that extra 1.5-2 million he's making more than he should will prevent us from properly compensating someone who deserves it... whether that be a current player we need to re-sign or a UFA (or cap space to bring in someone via trade).
Big no to Nash unless we can steal him away from the Jackets.. and I doubt that happens (prove me wrong, Burkie!).
Forget oragnizationl depth.
We have these prospects to trade: kadri, colborne, Aulie, blacker, frattin, mcKegg, biggs, percy, 1st 2012, ryynas, scrivens. Then we also have roster players like schenn, grabo, kulemin, macarthur, komisarek, lombardi, armstrong all available for trade. (I left out gardiner and franson as i don't think burke will move either).
Basically what your implying is that if we trade for Nash and/or Carter then we'd have to empty the cupboards. But if you look into those cupboards you'll see we have plenty to offer for Nash (and if CLB packages carter then he won't be worth much as people are saying he'd be a throw in to just get rid of him).
Now assuming we get Nash and Carter together we'd have a line up like this:
Nash + Carter for 1st 2012, schenn, kadri, colborne, aulie, macA, komisarek, lombardi + 1 or 2 lesser prospects.
lupul - carter/bozak- kessel
kulemin - grabo - nash
(w/e prospect didn't get traded)- connolly- armstrong
Now those two will be here for a long time. We shipped out about 14m and in return got 5.5+7.8. so we save a few hundred thousand. Cap goes up in the summer, we have about 7 years to restock the farm with more prospects (we still have a lot left in there) in a similar fashion to what burke has been doing for the last two years. I would be very happy with a team like that.
My issue is the fact that Rick Nash is garbage more than what we give up. His contract runs another how many years? Six? Nash has five more points than Tyler Bozak, where does his value even come from? Where would he be expected to slot in on the totem pole? I also don't like Carter, so I'd rather see what a guy like Colborne can cook up for us up in the pros, and save the dollars for the UFA market.
