The downside is that JR loses the upperhand when it comes to negotiations. He knew there were two options when it came to Ruutu: Trade or resign. He can't let Ruutu walk, not after what happened with Whitney and Cole. Both he and Ruutu (or more specifically, Ruutu's agent) know it.

He can't trade him now, so all that's left is to resign. And Ruutu's holding all the cards.

Re-sign him or hope like hell that there's another team out there that is sure he'll be back at 100% and will offer us a premium for him.

In the last week or two, I had already convinced myself that Ruutu would be re-signed and I didn't have much of a problem with it. This just seems to further solidify it, and I still don't have a problem with it.

Rutherford said nothing has changed as far as the team wanting to re-sign Ruutu. Unless I missed it, he never mentioned anything about it changing things on the trade front. Add in this from Pierre LeBrun and, well...

Tuomo Ruutu

You can also officially scratch Tuomo Ruutu's name off the trade market. That was pretty much the case last week when Carolina Hurricanes GM Jim Rutherford announced he would try to re-sign the pending UFA forward, but now with Ruutu out three to four weeks with an upper body injury, it makes it a moot point. A Canes source confirmed to ESPN.com Tuesday night that Ruutu would not be going anywhere. Talks on a contract extension continue.

I would have loved to have gotten a 1st rounder or a good prospect for trading Ruutu. But if the goal is to win another cup within the next 3-4 years I really think the Canes have a better chance of that happing WITH Ruutu being a Cane than it happening without him on the Canes.

Let's face it he's not a superstar nor does he do anything flashy (same things that were said about Draper/Maltby/McCarty) but the assets that he brings are exactly whats needed to win a cup, just like the Detroit checking line was needed for the Wings to be successful.
Unfortunately, the supporting cast is what's lacking right now for Ruutu to play the proper role on a cup winning team.

Just go ahead and point to all of the teams that have made trades so far pre-deadline. I'll be waiting with bated breath.

Doesn't JR always makes trades much earlier than deadline day though? I'm pretty sure the Stillman/Commodore - Eaves/Corvo swap was a week before the deadline.

Sometimes he does. There's two weeks left. Hell, maybe teams weren't offering what he wanted. You don't trade Ruutu just to trade him.

Without knowing what was offered, we don't know if it was that was simply a matter of JR asking for too much or other teams not offering enough. The rumored asking price from JR was a 1st+great prospect, which probably would have been a fine asking price on deadline day (bidding war and all that), but probably too much to ask right off the bat.

Here is your list.

My point, however, was that you had to call an opinion different than your own ridiculous. There really is no reason to get defensive and act like your idea is better.

Can this season get any worse?

Yes, we could finish 9th.

Maybe if we don't trade Larose, Dwyer, Spacek, Stewart.

So wait, if Ruutu was dealt for a 2nd and mid-level prospect while a guy like Penner (or some other comparable player) got a first+ at the deadline, you mean to tell me this board wouldn't erupt at JR for not waiting to get the best offer? Why make the trade for less than you want just for the sake of making a trade? That's just poor asset management.

Sometimes I think people will complain about JR just for the sake of complaining. He broke his non-negotiation policy to make sure he didn't lose these players for nothing, and somehow he still screwed up? Ridiculous.

I'd erupt simply because if that's the going price it's better to just keep the guy. Would have nothing to do with injury or what Penner got because Lombardi was an idiot last season when he made that trade.

I think you can blame JR for a lot of things. This situation just isn't one of them.

This. Could not agree more. JR did what he should've done with Ruutu. Gauge his interest in re-signing and if not then wait until the price is right to deal him. This is just a situation of bad luck! Nothing more.

Hey, good work. However, I meant *this year*.

I just do not accept the opinion that JR could foresee an injury and thus deal Ruutu an inordinate amount of time before the deadline. In that case, why wasn't he dealt in December? What's the cutoff?

I think this is comparable to tying a guy up in front of the net only to have a centering pass bounce in off your foot. It's just bad luck.
