Which Ryan will it be? Jones or Smyth

For the most part, fans in Oil Country were ecstatic when the club decided to bring back fan favourite Ryan Smyth for the 2011-2012 season. While Ryan has been given far too big of a role with the club this season, he has managed to give the Oilers some secondary scoring. He has been far from consistent but still has found a way to produce numbers, while playing more then nearly every forward on the team. That being said, Smyth is set to become a UFA this summer and that puts this organization to a very interesting crossroad.

huh? wha??

Why do we have to pick and chose between those 2? I can totally see both of them being extended.

Smyth will be reduced to 4th line duty, and PK, while being a player-coach. Jones will continue to do his thing on the 3rd line.

Having a lot of depth is called a 'high quality problem'. Lack of depth has killed us on many occasions the past few years.

We actually lack depth IMO and need more of it. Terrible post again, I don't know why I click on them

They should both be on the 4th line. On any playoff team they surely would be.

What cross-roads? Why would the Oilers have to choose? What nonsense is this? I don't really have much of a problem with the self-promotion (since I usually ignore it) but at least bother to learn about the team before spamming the forum.

We'll be sitting fine if our bottom six looks something like this:

Smyth - Lander - Jones
Eager - Belanger - Horcoff (Belanger and Horcoff as our two centers for the pk, Smyth and Lander as the wingers).

The problem this year is the same as most; we've had too many guys playing one line further up in the roster than they should.

You have to consider the source of the where the OP got the link. Rob Sarnia is a fool. You only have to read some of his other silly articles.

I could see something like this in the dog days of summer, but leading up to the trade deadline we're wondering who the favorite Ryan is here? Really? How about Paajarvi's recent resurgence? Gagner's historic stretch, will it matter in the grand scheme of things? Petry's offensive production of late, etc.

Wrong, Smyth is better than the 4th line on any team.

Both of these guys are going nowhere.

Ryan Jones is a fan favourite with a very healthy cap-hit, who plays the game with a tremendous amount of heart, win-or-lose. His skill set and loyalty to this team will keep his salary low for the remainder of his career.

Ryan Smyth walked away from a good thing in Los Angeles to come home this season, putting his GM in an awkward position in doing so. Upon his return, he's shown he's got some game left, but obviously his age has taken a toll on his consistency. He's making 6.25M on the final year of his deal. He signs in Edmonton for the remainder of his career and assists in the development of our young core. Does he play 82-games a year? Who knows. But he's a dressing room presence that shows these kids what it takes to wear the crest.

Smyth's ice time should be cut to 13-15 minutes. He should not be playing 20+ minutes anymore.

Jones belongs on the 4th line. There are quite a few bruisers on the FA list this summer. I'm sure they can find checking RW for the third line.

He's currently on the third on the second worst team in the league. Half the reason he wanted to be traded from LA was the fact that he was gonna be having his minutes cut.

Yah OK, Smyth is way more valuable on the open market than you think. And those teams are not looking to put him on the 4th line. There is no doubt he has looked worn out and tired at times this year but give your head a shake with the 4th line crap.

Give my head a shake? Did I saying anything about the fourth line? I stated he is on the third line on the 29th team in the league. Maybe give your head a shake and learn how to read.

Whatever, you were responding to my response that claimed Smyth should be on the 4th line. I know in a 19 post thread its difficult to follow the convo

I'd probably read the article if the paragraph would kinda suggest what the link is about.
