Well, this draft more than the last three I care less and less about where we land overall. It almost seems like it would be better to end up 3 - 5, and not have to choose Grigorenko. Just getting a bad feeling from him, and there's no denying we need defensemen.
It's also actually kind of nice to be able to cheer for the oilers to win even though they're out of it, the last couple years were painful towards the end of the season.
Hitmen v Blades last night. I've watched Thrower extensively since willing his way onto this roster as a smallish 16 year old. Thrower has heart, guts and character. Love players like this.
Thrower's playing huge minutes this year on an injury racked team and is producing big points in his draft year. Very heavy shot and most importantly keeps it low and on net. In OT hit the post on a howitzer. Unfortunately turned puck over on the winning goal. Not as physical or abrasive as I've seen but not surprised as he logged likely 30+ minutes. Thrower is undersized but good skill size and compete level are exceptional. More 2nd rounder though in my eyes.
Sutter was okay as was young Ryan Olson but not overwhelming. Russian goalie Makarov had a great game with 40+ saves. He was however sliding around a lot in his crease - more athletic versus technical. Got beat up high with a tendency to go down and often. Makarov kept the Blades in it with little in front of him - try had only 12 shots after 2.
I am guessing the drafting will be something like 1.yakupov 2. Grig 3. murray 4.forsberg 5. galchenyuk 6. dumba
I am pretty sure the oilers are going to etleast finish bottom 6 so any of dumba/murray yakupov/grig will help this team moving forward, at this point as long as the player can help this team I don't care what position they are, as long as they don't end up busting out and not even being a good nhl player.
I would be shocked if they pick galchenyuk or forsberg though.
Well it didn't take long for a team to notice Brendan Shinnimin ripping it up in the WHL... he was just signed as a free agent to a 3 year ELC by Phoenix. Not surprising someone jumped at him after he put up 43 pts in February alone... that's Gretzky/Lemieux type numbers.
Wouldn't have minded the Oilers taking a shot at him as he could turn out to be a steal.
1. LW/RW Nail Yakupov- Sarnia Sting (37 GP, 30-35-65)
2. C/LW Mikhail Grigorenko- Quebec Remparts (51 GP, 37-41-78)
3. C Alex Galchenyuk- Sarnia Sting (N/A)
4. D Ryan Murray- Everett Silvertips (36 GP, 8-16-24)
5. D Mathew Dumba- Red Deer Rebels (59 GP, 17-28-45) 6. LW/RW Filip Forsberg- Leksand IF (41 GP, 8-8-16)
7. D Jacob Trouba- USNTDP (38 GP, 5-17-22)
8. D Cody Ceci- Ottawa 67s (55 GP, 14-41-55)
9. D Griffin Reinhart- Edmonton Oil Kings (49 GP, 12-19-31)
10. C Radek Faksa- Kitchener Rangers (53 GP, 23-32-55)
11. D Morgan Rielly- Moose Jaw Warriors (N/A)
12. LW/RW Pontus Aberg- Djurgårdens IF (44 GP, 8-7-15)
13. C/RW Zemgus Girgensons- Dubuque Fighting Saints (37 GP, 15-24-39)
14. RW Sebastian Collberg- Frolunda HC (40 GP, 0-0-0)
15. C Brendan Gaunce- Belleville Bulls (59 GP, 25-35-60)
Really? Those are the Forberg's numbers? Am I the only one confused why he's a consensus top 5 in the draft with those stats? PRV put up almost identical numbers in the SEL in his draft year and picked 10th. Isn't SWE-1 a league below SEL?

Trade one of Hemsky/Paajarvi/Gagner for defense/center upgrade?
I can't see us trading for a winger. Especially to have him play on the right side. Eberle is 10 points away from matching Ryan's career high of 71 points and he's going to do it without having Getzlaf as his center, the Richard winner, the highest scoring Dman on his team.
The Oilers are going to get the second pick (barring a massive collapse allowing Columbus to pass them) and they'll pick Grigorenko with the idea that he'll be the ideal second line centre behind Nuge.
That might leave Gagner's future somewhat in doubt because, well, dude can't play wing.

Yeah, i don't understand this talk about Gagner's supposed versatility. He sucks at wing, it was a big reason why he struggled earlier in the season along with the nagging injuries.
Gagner is a center PERIOD, if it can't work for him here at center (pretty likely due to redundancy) then he'll have to be moved.
The idea of going into 2012/2013 with a sophomore and a rookie as our top two centres is scary but it probably won't happen anyway. It wouldn't surprise me to see Grigorenko back on the Remparts next season. He has some maturity issues to rectify.
Everett Silvertips sit 8th in the WHL West after an important win over Seattle. the 7th, 8th, and 9th teams have 46, 45, and 44 points respectively. It's going to be a dog fight for the last two spots, with dark horse Prince George sitting at 40 points right now.
Red Deer is sitting 9 points out of the last playoff spot in the East.
I dunno, getting into the playoffs alone may be enough to boost Murray up up and away from Dumba. Playoff viewings have are a nice boost to the stock.
Oh, and I think Montreal overtakes us for 2nd. Or a team wins the lottery and we get jumped. I dunno, just a feeling that we're going to be picking 3rd... and Ryan Murray.

I think it might be a good idea to shop the 2nd overall pick for a bit more of a proven defenseman and just keep Gagner as our future #2 center. We'd have a much more balanced roster. Here's some ideas to consider:
BUF: 2nd for Myers
MTL: 2nd for Subban + Tinordi
NSH: 2nd + Whitney + Omark for Weber
PHX: 2nd for Ekman-Larsson + Boedker
TBL: 2nd for Hedman + Tokarski
WSH: 2nd for Carlson + Neuvirth
I worded that poorly. I just meant that I think he needs to mature as a player still before stepping into the NHL.
The thing that I see repeated the most in Grigorenko scouting reports is that he controls the pace and tempo of a game. I didn't see that at the World Junior Championships when he was lined up against top tier talent from around the hockey world.

in fairness to grigorenko, he had a leg injury during the WJC and was essentially skating at half his normal ability

Four and out isnt going to do much for his ranking.

That is a tourney for 19 and 20yr olds.
Did you see Taylor Hall controlling the pace and tempo of games during his WJC tour?

No.
And Gagner isnt going to get it done for 2nd line C on this team.
Trade one of Hemsky/Paajarvi/Gagner for defense/center upgrade?
No. Would Rather:
Take Grig
Take Murray
Trade for OEL
Trade down 1 spot.

Im not sure how i feel about myers, buf may not like
MTL says no way
im not buying Weber unless he wants to play here, he'd have to negotiate a new contract WITH US before the trade
I'd go for OEL alone, PHX may not, and wouldn't add Boedker.
TBL needs D, cant see them trading Hedman
WSH, i have no idea how they'd view this, i like carlson, but is his high end really all that impressive? maybe

Hopkins?
Seguin?
Hall definitely had some great moments during his WJC tourny. He was stuck with Kadri who kept whiffing on shots and probably lowered Hall's point totals.

Hall didnt do much.
That doesnt mean he wont be a great player or wasnt a great pick at #1.
The point is that draft eligible players dont usually do much at that tourney.
