Leafs next year

I'm really scared that next year our team will look very similar, maybe worst if Grabo leaves. I don't exactly mind this team, but they are inconsistent, terribly weak and not ready to compete. This is already Edmonton's rebuild length if we go into next year and the year after, and looking a little worst in the future. Sure call me a typical leafs fan complaining at a down time, but this team needs a rebuild. We have a weird core made up of players that didn't really want to play for their old teams, along with a bunch of terrible contracts.

IMO as a Leafs fan, this team needs a rebuild not some stupid retool. Retools don't bring you the good players that you need to develop. Kulemin(my favourite home grown player) is what we need more of, and we need some high end talent that played with us starting their first game.\

Plus its not like were one player away from competing, and if that is the case we will have a very short competing period. We need the whole team shook up

next year will be burke`s last year likely if we don`t make the playoffs, upon which you`ll see a real rebuild

that means we`ll be in the playoffs by 2016 or so

So in other words, tank for Mackinnon?

I've never been a supporter of tanking... but I hope the Leaf's tank for Mackinnon he's going to be a star.

Replace Komisarek with a capable defensive defender
Get a #1 2 way center
Figure out goaltending

That is what has to happen. I'm not sure if Burke/Wilson understand or believe if their is an issue with the leaf defence - given they thought Lebda is a capable NHL defenceman.

The Leafs are incapable of drafting well.

I don't think we need a full Oilers style rebuild since we already have some good young players to build around but it would absolutely be in the Leafs best interest to sell at this year's deadline and then go for MacKinnon next year. Until the Leafs add a true franchise player they are going to continue spinning their wheels in mediocrity, and barring some sort of miracle we aren't getting a franchise player without getting a lottery pick first.

i don`t think any team outright `tanks`

i`m about playing our young players though. i`d love to see kadri, frattin and maybe colborne be up here by now and what ever happens happens

We need a lot of big players as well. With Burkes drafting, which has been my favourite part of Burke when he kept his picks, the bottom 6 is pretty well built, having actual gritty players playing those lines instead of failed prospects or terrible signings. We need to gain good young players to fill up the top lines. Whether thats through a draft or not I don't know, but this team is terribly built. It has no balance at all.

Also agree with the two posts above me

And there fans will be able to cheer there own draft picks on. I would have loved cheering for Seguin way more then Kessel TBDH. They will have a Chicago type atmosphere soon

you should read the book leaf abomination, it has some good interviews with JFJ

i listed some of his quotes last year about his situation here in TO

he did a presentation to the board how it was important it was to draft etc but they put pressure on him to put a competitive product on the ice right away

it kind of reminds me of some of the things burke says when he feels he feels obligated to his season ticket holders to put on an entertaining product

it may be that we are cursed man

the only way we improve is by an `accidental tank`, except we had one in 2010 and it happened to be the year we traded our 1st round pick

Have to agree it doesn't look like the team will be much better. At best you replace Gustavsson with Owuya or Scrivens which doesn't change much. Connolly and Lombardi will still be eating up cap and doing little. Not sure how much better Kessel/Lupul can be.

Of course it's utterly hopeless to hope that we sell some guys off and hope to get near first in drafting position. This team can only suck when we don't have our pick.

If the Leafs don't make the playoffs this year, Rogers/Bell should make their mark on the team and sack both Wilson and Burke. Brian's been given enough time to turn this team from a 9th place team to a bottom dweller back to a 9th. Time for change.

That year was still pretty entertaining(for a bottom 2 team) and was still sold out almost every game, So MLSE doesn't lose any money, and we get what we want

Stastny putting up worst numbers then Bozak is not the answer to this team at all.... Doesn't make us bigger or even better at that. Goaltending also is really not the problem here, its the system and the amount of terrible players. Problem is, with our make up something besides speed is not really an option, so with this team we can't even change the system

I still can't believe we missed our chance at getting a young 1st line two way center last summer when Mike Richards was traded and the Flyers apparently wanted Kulemin and Kadri for him. That was probably Burke's one realistic chance at acquiring that type of player without having to draft one.

Leafs will be better if we trade our lineup with any other teams, and our coach with a bag of pucks.

i doubt burke gets canned this year, but definitely next

hope they bring in an AA type GM

he would do wonders in a capped league

for the record i like a lot of burke`s trades but his downfall will be he didn`t take advantage of the first 2 years or so to bottom out and try to acquire some top- level talent
i can be sure 99% of the fans would have gone with that plan

he could now have 1-2 future superstars and a solid core of young role players that have promise

problem is he can`t go backwards now, so he must scramble to try to make it in
