This was my immediate question. This means we have soupy, kulikov, garrison, weaver, ellerby, guds, jovo, and strachran on 1-way deals when healthy.... Someone has to go. I just don't see how an offensively challenged team can go into the playoffs with 8 defenseman and no secondary scoring.

And they are all signed for next year other than garrison. So if we don't make a move, garrison is gone.

Tallon should take advantage of Garrison's high value and trade him for some scoring, IMO.

I overlooked that point, thanks AG. But still, a playof team can't demote a player simply because he's 2-way. If Tallon feels he is one of our top 6 D-men, than he should be kept up IMO. The question that needs to be asked, is which 6-7 (I'd keep one extra) d-men are worth the most to the panthers today, and I think off man out is jovo.... But trading/dumping him might not be possible.

The other option is moving garrison for the right offer has to be on the table unless Tallon is 100% positive he can be signed.

The guy has out preformed my expectations... Happy to have him and hopefully this move is going to benefit us in the future. esp if we cant sign Garrison or don't want to over spend.

This isn't good for Garrison, imo.

Soupy isn't going anywhere because of his contract/he's awesome.
Jovo is here to stay with that terrible contract.
Weaver just recently signed.
Kulikov is here to stay.
I don't see how Gudbranson's not on the team next year.

That leaves Strachan as the #6. Unless if they just gave a one-way to a #7 D-man, but why would they do that?

I think Garrison is the odd man out here unless Jovo decides to retire. Might be best to move him at the deadline, but what can you get for an UFA defenseman?

Maybe management is hedging their bets... If Garrison/Kulikov/Ellerby don't re-sign or Jovo retires... they locked in Strachan for a season and hopefully Robak/Petrovic are NHL-ready or close enough to NHL-ready if the re-signings just melt-down on Panthers management.

On the other hand, if everything goes swimmingly and he's suddenly the 7th/8th d-man, he's got a friendly cap hit and could net a good depth forward in return... Or as part of a deal with some forwards if some prospects hit the ground running next season.

Yeah, true.

If Jovo retires, it still counts toward the cap, right?

Maybe they can use an amnesty on Jovo? I was reading the main boards the other day and they were talking about a new CBA that might include an amnesty clause like in the NBA. Although if the Panthers did that, I'm sure they'd use it on Upshall, at this point.

I'm very happy for the guy. He's earned it with his short time with the big club. I'd think this was the last straw for Ellerby and it concerns me with Garrison. I really don't want to see him go. I wonder if Tallon has a plan up his sleeve that will come out of the blue.

I don't think it will effect us if he retires, we don't pay right up to the cap but would be good to be able to spend his money of other players. I have never liked the contract, would like us to be able to trade him but I dunno what other team would take him.

Good to see Strachan getting rewarded for his play. It also sends a good message to the players in the AHL that they will get chances to prove themselves and rewarded if they take them.

I think he has raised some eyebrows with his play and is possibly now seen by the organization as a 7th d-man, as Strachan is a more ideal 7th d-man than a young guy like Ellerby or Gudbranson who would be better served getting experience by playing than sitting in the press box more often than not.

I agree with some that this probably means one of our current top 6/7 d-men probably won't be with the team next year. I'd guess Garrison since he is a UFA and due for a hefty raise since he is (still) leading the league in goals scored for a defenseman(although this is very misleading as he only has 10 assists and is mid-30s in the league in d-man scoring overall, including 3rd on our team behind Campbell and Kulikov).

If Tallon doesn't think Garrison will re-sign for a reasonable number and/or could be replaced from within it would be interesting if Tallon would trade him for a top-6 forward. I wonder if Garrison, one or two of our not-quite-top prospects(Petrovic/Robak and/or Shore/McFarland) and a pick or two would be enough to get Nash out of Columbus?

Think this affects ellerby more than than garrison. Wouldn't be surprised to see ellerby moved sometime before next season. Stratchan is a serviceable #7. Nothing more or less.

how does a guy prove that he is more than just a bench player. Jeremy Lin is proving it right now with Knicks.

Why cant strachan be something more than a #7 defensemen. From the games he's played he has done everything incredibly well.

my guess as to why this happened:

one of two things will happen

if there are no trades - the panthers likely will have to send down strachan when everyone is healthy. they are not going to carry 8 d-men. by giving him a 1-way deal next year, it makes it alot less likely that he is claimed on waivers. teams are extremely hesitant to commit roster spot to players, especially one like strachan who hasn't proved all that much at the NHL level yet. despite his recent play, he is still far from a proven commodity.

or

ellerby is packaged in a deal at the deadline.

thats how i see it. good for strachan though, he has played well.
