After the hissy fit I pulled when the Ference extension went down, and the amount of crow I'm still eating for that, I'll just say congrats Johnny and look forward to 3 more years in the black & gold.
Exactly. I don't think we can be this upset about Boychuk's raise. Chia proved us all wrong once with Ference. It's seems high to me, but if it helps to solidfy the defense for the next few years, I'm happy.
So uh...what the hell do people expect Boychuk would have gotten as a UFA? Do you actually think with 30 teams bidding he would have gotten LESS than this?
Seems like a fair deal, especially in a world with Tim Gleason pulling down 4 starting next year. Boychuk has flaws but he's a legitimate top 4 guy on a championship caliber team. There's something to be said for that.
The AAV is high, to be sure. But how much would Chiarelli have to pay on the open market for another player of equivalent skill? Look at how much Wideman is getting. Halfway decent D-Men are no cheap, unfortunately.
And if you want a cheap replacement, you end up getting guys like Corvo (yes, I know it was a trade, but that is the caliber of player I'm talking about).
The salary cap is going to go up and Savard's number is still on the books, so this hit is still somewhat absorptive in the big picture.
