O rly?

Anyway, we get the point that Sami has added some muscle once again, and that is a very good sign. 16 kilos is obviously to much. Cant wait for the training camp (oh well... ) to begin, then we`ll know how much he`s added.

Yeah, gaining 16kg of muscle in that amount of time is near impossible. It must be a mistake.

Well I don't doubt that, but the report that he's gotten bigger for NHL play seems about right.

The reporter has had old info on Sami's weight, then heard what he weighs after this summer and Sami has gained 16 kilos over a year maybe? Two years?

Yeah thats seems most likely. Many sites still have old information on his weight and height.

So Vatanen weighs now 86 kg (190lbs). So he has gained 16 kilos in two years. Not bad still though. If he keeps this up he'll weigh 166kg in ten years .

86 kg is respectable weight for a 179 cm tall 21 y.o. As a comparison, Lubo is weighted at 89-90 kg.

Oh and, Souray will wear #44.

Hell Crosby only weighs 200lbs and is an inch taller. If Vatanen really does weigh 190 and it's properly proportioned to his core, he'll be just fine with his already tremendous balance and skating skills. It's better to be more compact than to be lanky, so a 6'2 200lb Fowler is worse off than a 5'10 190 Vatanen, all proportions and balance being equal. Very good news.

It's important to realize, however, where that weight is. Crosby is well known for having massive legs, and an obscenely strong core. Just having the weight, even muscle weight, isn't enough. Of course, Crosby is also Crosby. Another player with his size might have a lot more trouble, which still doesn't stop Crosby from having some injury problems. That's one of my biggest concerns with Vatanen right now. Visnovsky is also an example of this. Vatanen is clearly talented, but concerns for his size aren't just about whether he can play well in the NHL(I think he can).

Hence my properly proportioned comment . But seriously, that's exactly what I was saying. Look at Bobby when he came into the league (hell, even now) he weighed a lot, but his proportion was all wrong, way too top heavy.

It wouldn't be wise to put up 16kgs in one summer, too much too quick. Hope that it's weight gain in 2 years time.

That was a movie... and the character in question was taking heavy doses of steroids to accomplish it.

As long as he did it in a montage, I'm sure it will be alright no matter how much weight was gained.

In a league as fast-paced and intense as the SM-liiga it is quite vital to do so. Defensemen have far less time with the puck than in the Elitserien.

That's a real good habit, because he's going to have even less time in the NHL. He'll probably get rocked a few times, but that's just the game.
