Just look at the kid, hes so great. If he played in one of those helsinki teams, he would be as hyped as granlund, atleast. I personally didint live paul coffey or bobby orr time as active hockey fan, so Vatanen is best offensive defenseman what I have ever seen, anyone's not coming even close to it.

There is a recent Norris winner that would like to beg to differ

I like watching Vatanen's highlight videos over and over again. I love it when he just skates in the middle of opposing defence and goes for the net. He's so fast and smooth skater.

Me too. Even if he wouldn't be able cut it in the NHL, I would still enjoy to watch him here in Finland (or possibly KHL/SEL). I've got to say though, I haven't had a feeling this good about a Finnish prospect in a long time, much less a Finnish defenceman prospect.

Seriously, I remember when I heard about the Souray signing, the first thing that came to my mind (after "3 years?!?!") was how he would be stealing Vatanen's number

Don`t like to use that before he at least scores a goal in NHL, but that nickname could get appropriate

In Sami's case a lockout until Dec. would be great - he can play at the AHL under tougher conditions (some better players will play there). And he will be prepaired to the NA game when the season starts.

Vatanen arrived to Anaheim yesterday and was already skating in "Anaheim Ice"

If there is a lockout I really hope he goes to Norfolk...returning back to SM-Liiga would be bad choice... he needs to adjust to the smaller rink and more bigger opponents.

Kalvinators, is that "Hitman" on your avatar?

Yes, a HITman

PS:

i think Sami is aware of the very possible lockout and if he`s in OC, as mentioned before (would like to get the source though), i think he`s willing to come to NA, which means playing in Norfolk for some time.

Vatanen about the lockout and where he would play:

Link in Finnish:
http://www.ksml.fi/urheilu/kiekko/vatanen/1240993

"If the lockout comes so in my case the team basically tells where I'm going to play... and obviously they want to know my opinion too"

About choosing SM-Liiga or AHL: "Both have their own (good) choices" "Here in Jyväskylä (JYP) everything is familiar but in NA you would adjust to the smaller rink. It's still hard to say...we'll see if the lockout comes."

So SM-Liiga still remains as an option. I really do hope Sami stays in NA.
Not a big fan of throwing him in NHL right away. AHL should be great adjustment stage.

Honestly, a lockout and Vatanen staying with Norfolk the entire season would probably do wonders for his development. Not to say he couldn't just stay in Norfolk the entire season if there isn't a lockout, but I think he'd be called up quite a bit.

a short callup or two would hurt his development imo. Actually it could help for him to prepare for next season.

I think ideally Vatanen would start in the AHL, then get permanently moved up within a couple months.

A little longer in the AHL won't hurt though. I do think it's better to stay in NA than to go back to SM-Liiga. He's done about as much as he can do there. Not that the AHL is better, but a) it smooths transition time and b) once the season starts he could come to the NHL more easily.

And there are other players too... Niedermayer, Lidstrom, Green, Visnovsky, and so on... Vatanen needs to show he can put up 60+ points in the NHL before he can even begin to be amongst the best of the offensive defensemen.

Yes. But what i meant is he is amazing to watch. I never saw that kind of coast to coast skating and puck protection skills from anyone in the game.. Maybe couple of times, but Vatanen can do it so many times in a season.

Im not saying hes gonna score more than others, but I meant how exciting he is to watch. Paul coffey style.

Only 1 assist for Vatanen in his AHL debut. Did anyone watch the game?

Vatanen is already the best finnish d-man so it would be interesting to hear some news about him. Thanks.

I watched. He was stellar. Really the best guy on the ice. I love how you say ONLY one assist for the debut. Technically he's on pace for 76 points.

Since he was almost PPG in FEL last season they (we ) expect him to be over PPG in AHL. The time will tell, 60ish points would be okay by me. Anything less and I think he should play another season in the AHL to get his self confidence back.
