well, O'Marra was the last piece of the Smyth to NYI deal, so I guess we can now clearly say that Edmonton lost that trade.

Why would anyone trade AHL All-Star Bryan Rodney?

Rodney is having a better offensive season in the AHL and he's a defenceman. O'Marra is younger and has the mythical 1st round pedigree. Blockbuster.

A very bad defenseman even at the AHL level. He's good on the powerplay though.

From what I gather that's what we were looking for.

Not a significant trade for either team, but the Ducks get to try out O'Marra in Syracuse for the rest of the season and see if they want to take him on as a project next year as he is a RFA on July 1. Same with Rodney, except he'll be an UFA. Veteran AHLer for the Oilers. Lots of young guys down in their system, so a veteran's presence can't hurt.

Lol, that Kevin Cheveldayoff is only trading to boost the AHL team. Will someone please tell him that he's the GM of an NHL team? Man, TNSE should have just kept....

Wait a sec, are you saying every team in the league sometimes makes minor league deals?

Also the Oilers just lost one of their 50 contracts as Rodney is on an AHL-only deal.

Hemsky blockbuster coming soon?

That's not true. Rodney is on a 2 way contract. If he were on an AHL only deal, the Ducks would have no power over where he went. The AHL team could trade him to another AHL team, or he could sign wherever he pleased.

He can't be traded without an NHL contract.

Eh? So, the Oilers lost Smyth, got three players back (One of whom, Alex Plante, remains a prospect having just made the AHL All-Star game this year) two of whom didn't work. But what did the Islanders get out of it? If anything the Oilers win the deal because they ended up with Plante and dealt some odds and ends to get Smyth back anyway.

Actually, as near as I can tell, Ryan O'Marra will be an UFA this summer as he's 25, has more than 3 years of pro hockey experience and can't possibly hit 80 total NHL games played this season (He's at 31 now).

Well, we made the playoffs, and Garth made it clear that he was capable of making a big move. Smyth's decision to move on after the season was unfortunate, but his doing so also paved the way for the Islanders to finally do a proper rebuild, and to be bad enough to land the Marginally Talented Mr. Tavares.

For all those ducks fans complaining about Macenauer, there's your replacement.
