Good deal for the Bolts in my opinion, although this probably means they are not going to be trading any more top nine forwards (to the folks salivating over Purcell)..
That's not really workable (even if the cap goes up by two million). Substitute Schroeder for "Generic Forward" & Connauton for "Generic Defenseman" leaves at least some room for a "Generic player" callup to handle bumps and bruises during the year (again, this assumes cap goes up by $2 million & Salo re-signs for $2 million - so if cap remains the same, even this wouldn't be enough cutting).
How is that not workable? That's a ~$66M payroll and the cap is anticipated to rise to $68-69M. It's also a full 23 man roster. It's no tighter than we usually operate at.

I told ya so. I was right all along!
I'm pretty sure both were offered the same contract (ehrhoffs was even SLIGHTLY above Kevins). Bieksa took it, Ehrhoff didn't. We didn't "choose" one or the other.
You're assuming that Gillis didn't lowball Ehrhoff to see if he'd bite. It's a relative process, and just because Ehrhoff and Bieksa were offered similar deals doesn't mean that the Canucks thought they were equal players in a market context (ie. Ehrhoff is a $6 million defenceman who plays a $4.5 million game when the going gets tough). Ehrhoff was due a big payday, and that's what he got.
That Ovechkin wouldn't be available. This is a gamble in hopes that Ovie returns.
A 9 million dollar gamble? It's not one that this team needs to take. Similar to one of the reasons used against the acquisition of Rick Nash, if we have 9 million to spend, we'd be better off trying to get players that have a better chance to play up to their contracts and acquire players that won't cost us a bunch of assets. Suter? Parise? Weber in two season?
This team already has two Art Ross winners, one 65+ point Selke winner, and potentially two more 60+ players on this team ( Burrows and Booth). This team doesn't need more forwards. Saying this team needs more offense is a subtle way of taking another shot at the Sedins, and it's obvious that we know where you stand with regards to this.
Quincey's involved? Methinks the Avs just went from excited to furious in a couple minute's time.
edit: not that I think it's not a fair trade, but Avs fans seem to love Quincey, and some were speculating that they'd only have to forfeit spare parts/picks.
I don't know seems like this is just an opinion. I thought there were reports of coachers and players having beef with ovechkin.
I wouldn't say he doesn't use his linemates well.. the guy has over 300 assists in over 400 games..
I wouldn't be worried about his defensive side of the game either.
He's a player you make room for. But I just don't feel we are at that level yet of being able to afford him and still be able to ice a solid line up.
I think other teams would be able to prepare a much better package.
I think teams like New York, L.A. would put together a great offer.
Ovechkin won't be going anywhere, they'll try everything they possibly can to get him back into form before they give up on him. But personally I don't think he's worth $9+m per year to any team, despite his previous achievements. I don't think he has a winner's attitude. Of course this is just my opinion of him, people are welcome to disagree with it.
Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie
I am now hearing TB has traded Kyle Quincey to DET. Working on details but sounds like Quincey to DET for a first-round pick. Verifying.

You're probably right. But I was going by AVs fans
So now the Lightning have 2 1st round draft picks and still don't have a complete team. I want Lightnings' 1st rounder if Schneids is going the other way!
Jesus, a lot of GMs would get ****ing ripped for asset management like that. But it's Holland, so...brilliant!
This isn't a bad move. Quincey is a top-4 defenseman and Detroit will have his rights for another season. If borderline top-4 rental d-men go for 2nd round picks, then Quincey with another year or RFA is probably worth a first.

Weird moves all around...definitely didn't see Colorado being in buyer's mode with respect to Downie. Makes sense for Tampa now that they're flipping Quincey for a first, but that's a steep price from Detroit.
Those deals sound like fair value all around. If a marginal defenceman like Alberts is worth a 3rd, bottom pairing guys like Kubina and Grossman are worth 2nds, then Quincey with an extra year of team control is clearly worth a low first.

Odd.
They probably felt they couldn't keep Quincey but like the idea of trying to lock Downie up long term?
Hm, it's a shame the Canucks couldn't get involved; a 1st for Steve Downie is pretty damned palatable.
It's also confusing that the Bolts didn't hang onto Quincey, he is exactly the kind of defenseman they need.
I don't really like this move from Tampa's perspective - I guess Stevie Y thinks they are not close to contending if he values a 1st rounder more than Downie or Quincey.

I could see the Avs flipping Downie and another dman. Downie would look pretty good on the Canucks
