Quote:
December 8, 1988 -- In a game highlighted by the ejections of nine players (four Flyers, five Penguins) and 281 PIMs (141 to the Flyers, 140 to the Penguins), Philly recorded a 4-3 win and improved to 39-0-3 in the last 42 home games in this series. Pelle Eklund (2-0-2) scored the tying and go-ahead goals and Rick Tocchet (1-1-2) added a late third period PPG to make it 4-2. Ron Hextall made 27 saves and Jay Wells (1-1-2) added two points. Pittsburgh scored two PPGs in the first 5:15 of the game to take a 2-0 lead but failed on the next nine PPs and finished 2-for-11; the Flyers went 2-for-9 on PPs. Mario Lemieux scored a SHG in the final minute but earlier in the period was stopped on a breakaway by a Hextall poke-check. Earlier in the game, referee Denis Morel disqualified a potential Rob Brown goal due to an intentional deflection off his body which led Penguins' coach Gene Ubriaco to say afterwards "We'd better go to replays. All we want is justice." Tocchet also was vocal by a non-goal he contends went past goalie Tom Barrasso. The game's first fight, Jeff Chychrun vs Jay Caufield ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hb_s4HV5E0g), happened in the opening minute. At the 3:20 mark, Craig Berube and Richard Zemlak fought (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-DtYR3p-efY). The Penguins' Scott Hannan was ejected for a high-stick major on Eklund's tying goal. Early in the second period, Dave Brown fought Caufield ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ATFBdb7mevk), after Scott Mellanby was sticked in the face by Caufield, which went uncalled, and led Flyers' head coach Paul Holmgren to send out Brown, Berube, Don Nachbaur, Terry Carkner and Chychrun on the next faceoff. About eight minutes later, Eklund gave the Flyers a 3-2 lead just past the game's midway point. Twenty-seven seconds later, a massive brawl, highlighted by eight ejections (four to each side) and included 138 PIMs, began when Tim Kerr and Randy Cunneyworth collided along the boards ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dn8uhGYmrys) and escalated with fights involving Kerry Huffman vs. Dan Quinn, Kjell Samuelsson vs Steve Dykstra (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=udfYi2etkwU ), Pelle Eklund vs. Jim Johnson (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JykfAFyL4dU; "I think Pelle got a five-minute penalty for getting punched in the head," said Holmgren) and Jeff Harding vs. Zemlak ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v_Q6lGqfYqw . The second period ended with a Mellanby-Bob Errey fight (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uKVVSFsbRWw). The game had 281 PIMs (61 in the first period, 200 in the second period and 20 in the third period). The PIM leaders for the Flyers included Harding (25 PIMs), Mellanby (19) and Samuelsson (19) and Zemlak (22), Caufield (20) and Johnson (19) of the Penguins. Harding, in his second NHL game, received a double game-misconduct for making contact with an official during the melee and was suspended three games. Of the 38 players who saw ice time, 29 (15 to the Flyers) were issued penalties.

FLYERS-PENGUINS' 2010-11 SERIES:
  • 2010 -- October 7 -- The Flyers spoiled the debut of Pittsburgh's Consol Energy Center with a 3-2 victory in both teams' season openers. Sergei Bobrovsky, who became the youngest Flyers' goalie to start on opening night at age 22 years and 17 days, made 29 saves and was chosen the game's top star. Danny Briere scored the first goal in the new building 2:51 into the second period and Philly led the remainder of the game. Blair Betts gave the Flyers a 2-0 lead late in the second period. Tyler Kennedy scored Pittsburgh's first goal in the opening minute of the third period. Claude Giroux's nifty SHG gave Philly a 3-1 lead but 19 seconds later Alex Goligowski made it 3-2. Chris Pronger did not play for the Flyers. The game drew an estimated 730,000 viewers on Versus, the most-viewed regular season NHL telecast ever on the network. Highlights -- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qzBS3ZnUcjk

  • 2010 -- October 16 -- Brent Johnson made 29 saves and Sidney Crosby (2-1-3) scored consecutive PPGs in an 84-second span to lead Pittsburgh to a 5-1 win at Philly. The Pens scored three special teams' goals in the third period. Mark Letestu scored in the final minute of the second period to make it 2-1 Pens. After the game, an upset Mike Richards said about Matt Cooke “I chased him around last year in this building, but he wouldn’t have anything to do with it. Obviously in a one goal game at the end of the period he tries to come after me but when Sidney Crosby fights Carcillo maybe I’ll fight him." Richards' post-game comments -- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZmgT1...layer_embedded
  • 2010 -- October 29 -- Claude Giroux (2-0-2) and Mike Richards, the game's top two stars, led the Flyers to a 3-2 win at Pittsburgh. Sergei Bobrovsky made 26 saves. Dan Carcillo, a recent healthy scratch, also scored. On one goal, Giroux said "Richie (Mike Richards) – it was all him because he sees the ice so well." Four seconds into the contest, Richards fought Matt Cooke and later the Flyers' captain said “The things that were said last game carried over and I was just trying to get the guys going I guess. I’m not going to say anything (about Cooke) though. It’s after a win. I’m going to keep my mouth shut.” There were 32 PIMs and 10 penalties called in the opening 3:59 of the game. The Flyers killed all six Pittsburgh PPs. Highlights -- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0OXtAc3ck2I
  • 2010 -- December 14 -- Scott Hartnell's (1-1-2) PPG snapped a 2-2 tie midway in the third period and Brian Boucher made 21 saves in the Flyers' 3-2 home win that ended the Penguins' 12-game winning streak. The Flyers' PP was 0-for-5 prior to the goal (finished 1-for-6). Evgeni Malkin, who returned to the lineup after missing the last four games and was in the box during the decisive goal, scored two PPGs. Sidney Crosby had two assists and Marc-Andre Fleury made 34 saves. The Flyers killed a minor to Darroll Powe called with under three minutes remaining. The victory was the 20th for Philly, the 14th time the team reached that figure prior to Christmas, and enabled the Flyers to pass the Penguins as the top team in the NHL. The Penguins had not lost since November 15 and won their last six regular season visits to Philadelphia. It was the most watched regular season game ever on VERSUS and was also the most watched regular season NHL telecast on cable since December 4, 2003 (Detroit/St Louis on ESPN; 758,000 viewers). Highlights -- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tM9YhUUkyrM

  • 2011 -- March 24 -- Chris Kunitz and Alex Kovalev scored shootout goals (won 2-1 in four rounds) to lift the Penguins to a 2-1 victory at Philly. Marc-Andre Fleury made 19 saves. Mike Richards and Tyler Kennedy scored in regulation. Sergei Bobrovsky made 30 saves and was chosen the game's top performer.
  • 2011 -- March 29 -- Sergei Bobrovsky made 25 saves in the Flyers' 5-2 win at Pittsburgh. The line of Ville Leino (2-1-3), Scott Hartnell (1-1-2) and Danny Briere (0-2-2) combined for seven points. Hartnell and Claude Giroux scored 47 seconds apart to give Philly a 3-2 lead. The Flyers scored the game's last four goals inclouding two by Leino in the third period. With the win, the Flyers opened up a four-point in the Atlantic Division over the Penguins. The Flyers swept the Penguins in Pittsburgh for the first time since the 1983-84 season. The Flyers established a team record with a 25th road victory. Highlights -- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nxVKeKJoJ3g

FLYERS-PENGUINS' 2011-12 SERIES:
  • 2011 -- December 8 -- The Flyers ended the night on top of the Eastern Conference after a 3-2 win in Pittsburgh. Danny Briere, who was struggling with the flu, scored in the first period on a goal deflected off two Penguins. Later in the opening period, the Penguins failed to score during a 5-on-3 for 1:10 while two Flyers' defenders played without sticks for part of the play. Wayne Simmonds (1-1-2) and Scott Hartnell added second period goals which gave Philly a 3-0 lead. James Neal and Evgeni Malkin (1-1-2) scored for the Penguins. Ilya Bryzgalov made 25 saves. The Flyers had a 29-27 shots despite Pittsburgh's 14-7 advantage in the third period. Highlights -- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w0P0mJD8oNA

Is he a big hitter? I don't watch the western conference much at all, but I got the impression that he was more of a good positional player that wouldn't go out of his way often. I could be totally wrong though

Youtube has some giant hits by him, usually along the boards

So Jagr, JVR Mez, and Grossman are in tomorrow. Briere, Sestito, Lilja and Gus appear to be out.

I guess the 2nd line will be: JVR-Schenn-Simmonds

I think you are right. When he does hit, he has the size and strength to make really bone crushing hits though. From what I can understand the Stars fans have been a bit disappointed with his lack of physical play this season. Hopefully he can regain some of it.

Good game for him to get his Flyers debut in. Against the Penguins and a red hot Malkin.

I have a good feeling about this game. We'll win and score lots of goals again.

4 - 2 Pens. 3rd Pen's goal is late in the 3rd period and the 4th is an empty net!

Hate afternoon games, but i hope we play well......I hope the fact that our new Dman will now be playing in front of sellout crowds on a regular basis will really charge him up and get the juices flowing for the last 1/3rd of the season etc.....

Get the early goal, keep the foot on the gas and drive to the net. Drive Malkin wide. If we do everything right this is ours for the taking. Let's ****ing do this.

Regarding Grossman -

I went to a Dallas Stars game a few weeks ago and there was absolutely no passion whatsoever in that building. It wasn't empty but it was quiet and it was boring. Even though the play was pretty good there was no energy at all. About a month ago I went to an Avalanche game and that was even worse. Horrible building and no juice from the crowd at all. Both places felt the same. Seemed like everybody was there to see some sort of novelty. "wheee they're skating!" It was like I was at a Wings lacrosse game. (sorry - lacrosse is cool but if your kid isn't playing - you don't pay to see it)

In Philly/New York/Boston/Detroit and Canadian cities - if your defenseman screws up and you get scored on - somebody screams "wake the **** up Carle you bum!!!" or "plays like that will get you back in Adirondack Bourdon you moron!!!!"

I think passion in a building has an effect on players and they tend to play harder in buildings where the fans actually care.

no excuses Grossman - this isn't ****ing Dallas. Nobody would rather be at the rodeo or doing some other stupid **** they do in Texas. They're there to see you bury somebody and earn your check.

hard to believe matt carle will be on third pairing

i think he'll be on second with grossman

he has the highest TOI/game out of all defenseman right now

Matt carle is only a top pairing Dman when he's paired with a HOFer. So not really surprising.

Pens win 4-2, Evgeni Malkin undresses both Matt Carle and Bryz (who both remain this team's achilles) to the tune of 2 goals with Kunitz and Neal getting the other pair.
