Mark confirms it...

@andrewsdsp: The Dallas Stars are calling up forward Ryan Garbutt from the Texas Stars of the AHL.

Does his salary count for anything up here?

I also thought garbutt was a Texas Stars player. He now has to be added to the 50 contract limit. I personally would have given Fraser a chance on the second pp or Colton as a utlity guy. What does Garbutt bring?

CapGeek has him listed as having a contract with the Stars and shows him to be a RFA this summer. Could be that the Stars expect Benn to miss the next game, so they've called up Garbutt (a center) to get a look at him and help make a decision on whether or not to offer him a contract this summer.

4th line center IMO, give Wandell another chance in the top 6.

Sounds reasonable if benn is out. Again, i would have tried Fraser in limited action 5 on 5 and on the second pp with Ribs , Wandell Fiddler and Dowell at center with benn out but hey they still throw Petersen out there.

Why not Glennie either? For those in Austin, why this guy?

Garbutt has recently earned his way onto Texas' top line. I think just like James Neal, it's probably unlikely Glennie gets a call this season which sucks. They were patient with Neal, and they need to be with Glennie.

Since they believe they still have a shot at the playoffs, Glennie would have been playing 4th line minutes with Wandell in the Top 6. This way, Glennie still gets to play top minutes in the AHL and hopefully continue his strong play.

As far as Garbutt getting a new contract, he's performed well enough to deserve it, and you know the coach likes him (coached him in ECHL as well). Sawada and/or Wathier could move on via UFA as well.

Oh yeah .... and Garbutt sounds like he might be a pest. I know he's a willing fighter, and he's earned two abuse of official game misconduct penalties this year (most recent was last game) .... lol.

I would honestly like to see Sawada get a chance in the NHL if Burish and Dvorak aren't here next year. And hell yeah Ott replacement named after a fish and glutes.

I'll bet a crisp $1 bill that Wathier and Sawada won't be Stars next season if this coach is still here.

Here is a thought though .... Garbutt does not play Saturday. He's just here in case an unforeseeable injury or illness hits a forward in PHX.

Then call up Sceviour to play on Sunday after he plays both Texas games this weekend on Fri/Sat. I honestly I'm surprised he's not been up more. Gulutzen had a ton of faith in him last season in all situations. Plus, he's a good faceoff guy. This is his 3rd year as a pro, and he needs to really make the jump soon or risk turning into Wathier. He seems like he could be a good utility forward like Petersen was, but I think he'll have a better career. Maybe Stu Barnes in the twilight of his career would be a good hope.

Based on the contract limit, I'd agree 100%.

I would bet you Stefanovich, Esposito, Hauswirth, M. Neal won't be tendered QOs. (4 down)

Raycroft will not be retained. Spang will not be retained. Souray won't be retained. Petersen and Dowell will not be retained. That's 5. Wathier likely won't, but I think Sawada has an outside shot of being a fourth liner next season.

They're close even with all that.

You know ... I'll just do the thread I was thinking of.

Well, how many more guys are we going to sign in the coming offseason?

I did actually completely forget that we have a huge bumper crop of NCAA guys coming in . Chiasson, Smith, Smith, McKenzie, Winkler, Bergin, Guptill?... I doubt Stransky is in contention for an ELC (but if he is it'll slide)... Oleksiak maybe. We might see some weaker talent moved for picks, too.

I know AHLers do it a lot, but I wouldn't expect a guy playing his 3rd game in 3 days to perform very well.

I'm going to look into getting "Scott Glennie's Twitter" made into an official thread prefix.

We're not going to be bad enough unless Kari and Benn miss the entire season next year. Only way we can get him would be to trade up for likely second or third overall.
