Best backup in the NHL?

Plain and simple. Who's the best backup goalie in the league?

If you pick other, please specify.

Toskala, he is going to be a starter soon.

This is just me being a Flames homer, but certainly Roman Turek should have been listed. He is better then Jussi Markanen and some others mentioned.

Who is Gerber backing up in Carolina? Isn't he the obvious starter or were you thinking they would go with 20 year old Cam Ward?

Would you call Gerber a #1 goalie right now? Right now, until he is a starter, he is a back up. Its pretty simple.

Yeah it is pretty simple. With Cam Ward the only other goalie of note right now in Carolina it's pretty obvious that Gerber is the starter and thus a #1 goalie.

You don't label someone a #1 goalie until they are a #1 goalie. Gerber only has experiance as a back up in the NHL. Until he starts being a starter, he is still a back up.

Who is he backing up? Who is the starter in Carolina if not Gerber? Who is Carolina's #1 goalie?

In your words, "its pretty simple."

Ty Conkling of the Oilers looks to be the starting netminder for the upcoming season, but until he is an actual starter I am not going to call him anything more then he is, a back up. Is it so hard for you to understand that?

You aren't a starter, until your a starter. Just because the depth on Carolina is pure ****e doesn't mean Gerber is a starting netminder.

So after game 1 when Conklin(g) and Gerber start you'll be ready to call them "starters" and "#1's"? Don't you think it's safe to label them as such until such point as the goaltending situation changes with either team?

Seriously, are you just trying to be a total dick or does it just come naturally? Seems like you're disagreeing with me for the sake of disagreeing. You must be pretty bored to try and piss off other posters about semantics or does that get you off?

I think it's obvious to everyone who follows the NHL that RIGHT NOW Conklin is Edmonton's starter and #1 and Gerber is Carolina's starter and #1. Neither of them are backing up any other goalie. Neither of them can possibly be considered a backup at this point in time.

Its pretty simple.

Obviously you're trying to use the term much like we toss around the term "#1 defenseman". Where your logic fails is that teams that don't have a "#1 defenseman" in terms of the overall league still have a defensemen they consider a "#1". Teams wouldn't term their #1 goalie a "backup" goalie even if you think that goalie would be a backup on most teams out there.

I still say the poll is incorrect. Gerber is not a backup right now, its that simple. If he said, "What backup calibre goalies are the best in the league?" that would be a completely different question. Of course many feel that Gerber is one of the top 30 goalies in the NHL so his being on such a list would be a contentious point as well.

I know Toskala definitley deserved a spot with that solid ONE SEASON, if he even played a whole season. How did you even contend to vote him over Legace. And also you are not suppose to vote on your poll, well i dont atleast.

Anyway i voted for Legace, but maybe having that allstar HOF team in front of him helps to make him that solid a back up, but who knows.

no its not obvious , he had a solid season in ANA and Carolina lets weekes go and acquire Gerber. And for what reason....... to be the #1. PLus Gerber is cheaper than Weekes.
